amaysngrace Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 My daughter is stressed Happy Lemming. She’s only been a nurse for less than a year and she’s dealing with a pandemic at the ripe old age of 21. But she’s strong. She’ll get through it, it’s just tough right now. She doesn’t want to have to be the one to decide who gets the respirator and who gets turned away to die if she has that choice to make because there aren’t enough for everyone. Thanks for asking. 5
Ruby Slippers Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 ^ What a tough situation for medical workers. 2

I can't get my head around how nasty a person must be to abuse staff who are simply doing the best they can during panic buying. Times like these seem to bring out more of the best (generosity) and worst (me! me! me!) in people. Interesting. People are being nice here everywhere I've been ( Houston ) One of the managers was a bit obnoxious with me today and I reminded her to be professional, she was just irritated and tired, a younger member of staff came and dealt with it for her and smoothed it over. Otherwise people I saw are being pleasant and having a sense of humour and being patient with the lines. Not seen any of the nonsense reported in the media and there's plenty of food- not every item one might usually buy admittedly, but more than sufficient. The only things difficult to find= toilet paper, hand sanitiser, Lysol disinfectant spray and bleach. I eat healthy stuff because of diabetes and I found all my usual foods, so people could try the healthy food section for bread and crackers etc ( it is more expensive ) also in a big city like this just driving a couple of miles and there's another store with different selections. Stores like Dollar Tree and 99 cents only are useful too in US. People are calling and texting each other with 'supply' info. All the big stores have limits on purchase quantities now. -For older seniors in the UK they will remember WW2 rationing and ration books, it started with petrol/gasoline and then was applied to butter and sugar and meat! There's a PBS/BBC series 'Call the Midwife' the earlier episodes covered it very well. @Inflikted I have my anxiety disorder under control largely through copious down time, especially towards bedtime, I need to empty my thoughts and be alone more, and definitely not watch tv news. 1

Ruby Slippers Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 A quick news search doesn't look good. As of the most recent updates I can find, testing and protective gear for medical staff are inadequate, creating obvious problems 1

major_merrick Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 UPDATE With the cases expanding in the Mid-South and in our state, our county sheriff has announced that our county will go on lock-down when the first case occurs in the nearby cities. He has taken command of the County Defense Force, and all members are on standby. I expect they will be activated in the next week. Only county residents and landowners will be allowed in or out, and barricades and checkpoints were created long ago to prepare for this. Currently, school is suspended until mid-April....most likely indefinitely. In our county, public gatherings (except church) are discouraged or even prohibited. Churches are encouraged to hold services online, and I suspect sites like "GoToMeeting" that allow real-time gatherings of a bunch of people will become very popular. Non-essential businesses are closed. All restaurants and bars are closed. Grocery stores and gas stations have voluntarily started rationing. No sales to those who don't live in the county - driver's license with valid address required if the staff don't know you. Over the weekend, a man from outside the county tried to rob meat and toilet paper from the main grocery store at gunpoint. Employees at gas stations and stores are now armed. Lots of people are wearing masks and gloves, and there's very little traffic now. Some places in the cities are shutting down, including at least two food production plants that I've heard of. More likely to follow. Others are reducing workforce or adjusting shifts. My husband's company has reduced their active workforce. He's been told he can telecommute part time if he wants to. That will be more essential when his duties to the county increase. He's been in meetings the last three evenings with the Defense Board, so I don't get to see him much now. Wife #4 is now staying home, as she's due in April and wants to safely finish her pregnancy. GF#2 just started her job, but is now telecommuting. Supplies seem to be flowing in an orderly manner, but IDK for how long. Apparently truck drivers are encountering harassment, sabotage, and attempted hijackings in nearby cities. I went for a drive today just to look around (without being near anybody) and you can just smell the fear. We have radio broadcast updates from our county leaders now, which gives this almost a wartime feel. The fear is so much worse than the virus itself, and if people are going nuts over this I can only imagine what a more intense crisis would bring.

Well that’s what the Chinese billionaire thinks as well, which is why he’s being so generous to pick up where the ball got dropped here. Oh snap not the ball. It was an entire pandemic department that got dropped. I forgot. 1
SincereOnlineGuy Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 As of late Sunday night 3/15 The whole of "The Americas" have tallied 75 deaths from CV. (among total population of 1 billion) Roughly half of those are tethered to a 3-mile circle in one far-off spot. Europe, at the same time, has counted 2325 total deaths from CV so far. (total population there 3/4 of 1 billion) "Most" of the fatalities in Italy to date have been in people who have seen their 80th birthdays. (don't panic until you need computer or cell phone repairs while isolated there at home, then panic)
amaysngrace Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 As of Friday less than 15,000 people were tested, closer to 14,000 actually, in the USA. Of course numbers are going to be low if there aren’t enough tests to confirm. That’s basic math. 2

thefooloftheyear Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Its a ghost town this morning.....Dead quiet....For a Monday this is unheard of...Last time anything like this has ever happened was Hurricane Sandy...Only difference there was the drone of chain saws and generators... There are some things that are puzzling....India, a country with 1.4 billion people, only reporting 30 odd cases? If you believe Russia, basically unaffected...??..And now its reported that that while the US is in a calamitous lockdown panic state, yet China has it controlled and is back up and running....full strength..... I am not suggesting this is some form of bio attack, but it really does make you wonder...People panicked out of their minds...Schools closed, events shut down...Stock market collapse...Stores running out of food... If nothing else, the light bulb has certainly come on for those that are considering ways to attack the US.or cause even more political discord....No bombs, no planes. no guns, and the entire country is seemingly being brought to its knees... Redhead14 Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) I had the same thoughts. I'm thinking there is more to all this. The responses seem to be a mix of "oh man, we are under attack but we can't say it" and "we gotta let people know something". The numbers are relatively low, but awful enough to want to manage it and keep our elderly citizens safe and prevent the healthcare system from being overwhelmed, etc., but not enough to be going nutz. I'm not sure what, but I'm feeling like something else is going on. It seems more like an attempt to collapse the economy more than a health concern and maybe it's both - collapse the economy by creating a health concern. It's an awful thought. I've been thinking more about the aftermath of all this anyway more than about what's going on right now. It almost seems like a "message" of some kind. Edited March 16, 2020 by Redhead14 2
nospam99 Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Nothing spectacular, but some insight into how far the concern is going. Got the following in an email overnight from the leader of one of my hiking meetup groups ... Greetings fellow hikers. It is with great difficulty that I have come to the conclusion that I will not be scheduling group hikes until the CDC and government officials deem it OK to get back to our lives. The decision became clear to me today, after leading a hike yesterday of 20 hikers and attending a hike today of the same number. Despite all of us being aware of the situation, there were several instances where hikers were standing way too close, passing items back and forth, holding items for others, and generally doing the helpful things that we hikers do for each other on a typical hike. A woman fell today and we all rallied to her aid. It's what we do. In other words, it became clear to me that the social distancing we are requested and required to practice is impossible to do on a typical hike. 1

Get us used to hearing about it all, give us a little time to prep and feel like we have some control and give false sense of security, before actually enacting certain measures. If they clamped down suddenly, there most certainly would have been violence and resistance, etc. Edited March 16, 2020 by Redhead14
Gaeta Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 I don't believe in this conspiracy. China will economically suffer greatly from this. They may not care about their citizen but they care a great deal about profit and commerce. We all know who's responsible for the US suffering. I wonder how this would have unfolded if it had happened when Obama was leading. 2

It's just that the single line you took was from a post about panic buying so I gave a reply in that context. Every single post I've seen here that has advocated building a stock has supported doing so in a slow and steady way over a period of time. In any event, supermarkets are starting to ration supplies (though they're limiting people to 5 items such as pasta, handwash etc - which still seems a lot to me).

In my area, people have started talking about community initiatives (to help vulnerable people get food, prescriptions etc). I think that's a good, positive way to focus. I'm trying to cut down on news and anonymous social media platforms too. It gets too much of everybody saying essentially the same thing, but arguing about it anyway. 1 1
Ruby Slippers Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 I wouldn't be surprised one bit if this was engineered. Mainstream news sites are now reporting that some countries are saying it's a U.S. bioweapon. I believe Russia closed some borders way back in January. 1
