Even though the supermarkets will replenish, right now all the panic buying is creating those bare shelves and there's certainly a short term shortage in a lot of places.

A lot of people were saying 'don't panic buy', 'don't stockpile needlessly' weeks ago to avoid those situations too. They also could see that coming, and didn't (still don't) want to be sucked into other people's paranoia. Buying a little extra a week just in case if you can afford it sounds fine though, tbh.

A cupboard full of packets of pasta won't help swerve the virus in any event, and even those who test positive need to quarantine for 14 days only, not months on end...

Sure, there will always be the ones who don't have a backup plan or won't wash their hands, will sneeze everywhere and hug everyone on sight or think they're immune... but hey, we'll help them anyway!

Is it really that hard to be socially isolated and err on the side of caution knowing you might save a life or less discomfort for someone else?

Its just selfish.  No other word to describe it.

As a matter of fact, its quite easy.....I have been practicing this type of behavior for more than 50 years now...I could even teach it at this point...I think the last movie I saw at the theatre was "A Few Good Men"..😂

Not to mention I am a bit OCD, take extreme care of myself and also tend to always maintain space between myself and others, I think I am very low risk...

I'll do whatever the authorities recommend, but other than that not much will change...Being in the "need" business for the most part,. I am compelled to keep going, if for nothing else the people that truly need...and my guys....I could survive for years without any income at this point....

I wont say its true for you or anyone else on the thread, but it sure seems like some of the behavior being exhibited by a lot of folks is similar to the way a little kid reacts to a snow day....

It actually makes sense if it’s literally a short term loan with the aim of securing jobs. But the cynical part of me wonders whether they pocket the money which causes their share price to recover and then they will make some redundancies anyway, just to keep the shareholders happy.

I don't see it making sense even short term. Branson has incredible personal wealth, has sued the NHS fgs, and he enjoys massive corporate tax cuts. It's his time to give back. He should bail his own company out in the name of 'community spirit'. Any gvt money should go to straight to his employees, to the vulnerable and sick, and to frontline health professionals imo.

But who am I kidding - of course he'll get his bail-out.

My house share friend just returned from a St Patrick's celebration, she apparently isn't worried as 'nobody was sick there'...hadn't the heart to tell her Galveston County quarantined the first positive tested person yesterday at UTMB....

One of my lovely students has literally just emailed to say her mother got taken to hospital yesterday after being tested for covid-19. She had sepsis only a few months ago. There's no escaping this virus.

One of our major supermarkets has voice announcements between music reminding customers to not abuse staff.  I can't get my head around how nasty a person must be to abuse staff who are simply doing the best they can during panic buying.

Times like these seem to bring out more of the best (generosity) and worst (me! me! me!) in people.

Not much sympathy either but airliner air packs are very complex and cutting edge technology.

Below a AA 777 FO who mostly flies long haul  discusses flying and the coronavirus......

The air circulation is encouraging, but they only deep clean a plane about once every 45 days.  That's disgusting.

There was a woman on the coach in the same row as me from London to the midlands the other day and the whole way she coughed every few minutes into the air, not using her hand. Disgusting. I’m not a confrontational person so I got my spare jumper out of my bag and tied it round my face as a makeshift mask. For the next couple of days I kept getting paranoid that I’d caught the bloody virus. That’s what we’re up against here, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks don't care about others.  We>Me isn't a thought they can comprehend.

Dave Ramsey cancelled his upcoming cruise. I was pretty sure they would, even though just a week ago he was defiantly insisting he was going even if no one else did - which sounded nuts to me.

Also, I broke up with my boyfriend again yesterday, and this time I think it's for good. Out of nowhere he had another episode of verbal abuse. He tried to apologize, but I told him to leave. We got along well in many ways, but this dark streak keeps rearing its ugly head. We were such a good match in so many ways I wanted to give it every chance and I'm not sorry I did because now I won't have to wonder if I cut it off too soon.

I visited my parents yesterday and my mom was very sweet, loading me down with water and supplies. I should be fine, but if I need anything all I have to do is go to their house.

I'm happy I'll have some down time working from home starting tomorrow, no long commute, time to get my house and mind back in order and regroup. Hopefully I'll hear very soon from my new job about the start date and can begin getting into a good mindset for that.

Sending healthy, peaceful vibes to everybody out there! 💗

I'm so sorry for the disappointment you must feel as you're going through this breakup, RS. What a tough blow! But, IMO you are so wise to deal with it now rather than staying in the cycle for long term. Sending hugs and prayers.

It's both scary and very understandable to hear the stuff my state is doing to reduce gatherings of people. Not that I really go out much to be affected, but even still, it sounds like we're inching closer to everything just being completely "frozen" for an indefinite period of time.

Anyway, I'm so glad I managed to get out of retail/ customer service last year. I'd hate to still be doing that stuff with this going on right now. Granted, my previous job wasn't quite the same kind of retail, and I'm mildly curious how their business is doing right now, given that it's more "non-essential" and business focused. Anyway, I can't imagine what it must be like to be working retail/ service right now. My anxiety would be through the roof.

I'm still wondering what will happen with my current job, especially if things start shutting down more in coming weeks. I mean, technically my job is an office job, but I basically work in a small department of part of a corporate office that does the back end stuff for a local chain of small grocery stores. If the stores end up getting shut down, we'd have basically nothing to do, so I'd imagine we'd get shut down, too. But I'd imagine we wouldn't "lose" our jobs, because eventually when stuff reopens again, they'd need their staff back, right? Still, unless the government works something out, I don't know whether I'd be getting paid or not for any "shut down". And that's a bit concerning, with bills to pay.

Though, I'm not necessarily "safe" from exposure to the virus with my job, too, because we send things back and forth to the stores, so who knows whether the stuff that gets sent to us will have been touched by any number of people from the stores that may pass on stuff. And unfortunately, we're not exactly well stocked on rubber gloves or anything to be able to handle it every day. So, that's a little scary.

I'm also kinda paranoid because, for whatever reason, people often forget to tell me important things, especially at work, and I'm using a pre-approved personal day tomorrow, so if anything "happens" (like a shut down), I don't know whether any of my coworkers will reach out and let me know... I had a bit of anxiety last week, because I'm usually the first one in and my coworkers are often 10-15 minutes late, and I came back last week from a personal day, everyone else was late as usual, and I was sitting there thinking "Oh god, what if we got shut down and nobody told me, and I'm here and don't know that I'm not supposed to be?" until they finally arrived and I let out a sigh of relief, heh. I have a feeling I'm going to have a very similar train of thought on Tuesday morning. @_@

Yikes. Not great for sure...

I have to admit I'm not looking forward to going to work this week - massive international campus full of young adults coming and going in and out of various eateries into class with minimal thought for personal hygiene, sniffling on tissues that they leave lying around, with no concept of social distancing or a hand sanitiser...

Most are really respectful of others though, tbf

People who have been furloughed or lost their jobs, will be happy they have whatever they have stocked up beyond 14 days when the paychecks aren't coming and unemployment checks aren't covering everything . . .

No doubt, as I've mentioned upthread. Unfortunately many can't afford to bulk buy, and food banks are paying the price of other people's thoughtlessness. Lots of people will be in this same mess, so buying all the packets of pasta you can afford in just one day sadly means other people won't be able to buy anything that day. Sorry but panic buying is not the answer...

I didn't say "panic buying" is the answer.  They should buy some extras of things each time they go shopping until the "worst" happens not buy everything all at once.  And, really, it's a little late anyway for doing any real "prepping" but at least do the best they can for a while now anyway.

Most people were only buying all at once now though because that's what was being recommended.  Some people went a overboard for sure.

Sure, I agree. It's just that the single line you took was from a post about panic buying so I gave a reply in that context.

@Redhead14 Btw, I meant to say I totally get how you must be feeling re your son's situation. I'm not judging either way, you have to do what you have to do. This whole thing is a complete mess. Just shows not many gvts  actually do have  contingency plans when a massive public health crisis hits unexpectedly.

Domestic is like a bus. International is better, usually. Cleaners stay on for an hour or two, sometimes even longer. Also, I'll police my area, easy to grab some stuff from the lav. First is usually messier due to the food/drink service. People vary widely in sloppiness.

I think that I may take a stroll,
And buy myself a toilet roll.
At home it will be safely stowed,
With the other pallet-load.

How is your daughter doing??  I assume she has been briefed about what to do if this happens, but it is still very scary.
