Maybe Macron's talking about when the people who have caught it from the currently diagnosed cases in France start getting sick.

One of the biggest misconceptions right now seems to be you don't have anything to worry about if you're not elderly. Perfectly healthy people in their 30's, 40's and 50's are getting sick to the point they need hospitalization and sometimes ventilators. If there's enough resources to effectively treat them all then yeah, they'll most likely pull through. But a situation like Italy's, where there's not enough resources, is something no country is immune to.

President Macron of France said today  -

Second wave?
That sounds scary, but may be why this is all being taken so very seriously..
Italian doctors did report they are .dealing with younger patients, exhausted by the virus, now needing ventilation.
Maybe that is what he meant.

From his speech:

'For our collective interest, from Monday and until further notice, nurseries, schools, colleges, high schools and universities will be closed.

'Closed for a simple reason: our children and our youngest, according to scientists, are the ones who seem to spread the virus the fastest.'

Special childcare will be organised for healthcare professionals who have children so they are not burdened by childcare duties.

"Flatten the curve and essentially do nothing is the UK response, other European countries are being more proactive, at least latterly as the numbers and deaths rise..
The UK has such a pared down NHS due to austerity that the intensive care beds are never going to cope with anything major.
Northern Italy is a very rich part of the country with state of the art medical services and they can't cope...

I guess the UK Govt are hoping some of the "elderly and vulnerable" will die at home during their "self isolation"...

Glad we have the system we have and not theirs.

@littleblackheartI get there may be second, third, fourth... waves due to all sorts of reasons including the petri dishes that are our schools, but why would emergency services need to be prepared for younger patients, as up till now we have been informed we only need to be worried about the elderly and infirm

@elaine567I think he's saying that children and young people, while not at risk themselves in terms of symptoms, are the ones infecting others so in order to avoid a second wave of infections, kids should be staying at home and have minimal contact with people at risk.

I am well aware of that, but he said "a second wave that will hit younger people. "
Not a second wave that will be caused by younger people spreading the disease.

I think he's just preempting and making sure France is prepared for it rather than it be based on evidence. It's a precautionary measure for now, which makes complete sense, but that's not the main point of his speech at all.

I didn't say it was the main point of his speech.
It was an interesting "aside".

One of the largest US sporting events is about to take place over the next several weeks.  I am curious to see how

attendance will be impacted.  It's the NCAA Basketball Tournament (March Madness).  Will college fans TRAVEL

to see their teams play across the country?  If attendance is down, it will dramatically impact the hospitality

industry in the host cities.

It's official, NCAA tournaments cancelled.

Along of course with NBA, NHL, MBL etc have been put on hold.

16 countries in Europe so far have made that same decision. Makes much more sense at this point than closing borders, imo - it's not like the virus is discriminating on nationality grounds.

I county I live on the border of declared lockdown for 2 weeks which means all schools, gyms, theaters, recreation centers, etc.  So far not grocery stores but I'm seeing pics on Facebook from friends waiting in 45 minute lines at the grocery store.  Craziness.

Really? I have heard of some school closures but no county wide shut downs.  What county is closing everything?

I'm so glad I'm not a teacher.....having to scramble to try to adjust the curriculum for the rest of the year and/or switch to teaching online?  No thanks.

Today our city has shut down all municipal buildings and activities, our Province is asking the population to cancel all events with above 250 people. Some schools have started closing on their own before the order is given. I hope my teen school will close tomorrow or Monday, it's a big high school of 2600 students and lots of stories of kids traveling to Europe and back.  Our PM is asking for employers to get their employees go back home a different hours so it doesn't crowd the public transportation. The city is already getting quieter, less traffic. Those who can work home stay home.

The beaches and lakes are getting crowded.  People are ditching the densely populated city environments and opting for wide open spaces.

I am following suit.

I haven't seen such little traffic in the San Francisco Bay area in the past 25 years.

Same for us. I work in a health facility, but not a hospital. I anticipate we will be asked to stay home soon, many vulnerable children with complex medical needs. My other job is in the community, we have been told to call ahead and screen before visits - but I think that will change soon too. My city is shutting down and staying home...

Not that it is a major sport, but the XFL also suspended its season.

Now I am wondering about the Masters. I still cannot believe they cancelled March Madness.  I read today that it is estimated that in excess of

10 Billion US dollars are bet on the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament.  Even the bookies are gonna take a hit.

Around here, colleges have shut down for the semester!  Public schools are taking an early and lengthy spring break, effective tomorrow.  My husband told be that traffic in town was crazy.  He went to pick up a few treats from the store, and shelves were absolutely STRIPPED of all basic items and lines were long.

-No Toilet paper or paper towels, in spite of rationing

-All meat gone, except stuff $6 per pound and up

-Almost all dairy gone, except yogurt and ice cream

-Most staple vegetables gone, except cabbage.

He didn't even go into the pharmacy section, but I imagine that area is stripped bare too.  People are scared here, as there's confirmed cases a couple of hours away now and the number is growing daily.

The more I read about it, the less scared I am.  This thing seems to be a slightly enhanced flu.  We have no idea what the mortality rate will really be, since it hasn't spread far enough in the US yet.  I'm staying home since I'm pregnant, but if I wasn't pregnant I wouldn't really be worried about it.  I think the risk to pregnant women is the real unknown.  I mean, the elderly always die...pretty much a given.  But young healthy people are doing OK.  I'll go to a funeral on Saturday, and after that I'm not leaving the house for anything.  I hate staying home, but I'm doing it for my baby.
