Just updates ....

According to my local newspaper, Gov Cuomo has declared a 'state of emergency' in NY. Not clear to me that this means anything more than Cuomo, a notorious diva, getting his name in the news yet again. It will be interesting to see if specific actions by the state and local governments follow.

Also this years instance of an annual sci-fi/fantasy con(vention) in Troy NY has been cancelled. Good decision sez me.

I read the opposite in a BBC article this morning.  It starts in the nose as a regular old URI type thing and is only dangerous IF it travels on down to the lungs. Sometimes is just stays in the head.

Interesting, CO! Thanks! I did hear it's transmitted through eyes, nose or mouth but that sniffles don't result. But, you heard sniffles result! Hmmmm.

Better than Trump not testing just so it looks like his number of cases is lower than it actually is.  Why is it that such a rich, first world country hasn't got its testing up to the rest of the developed world?  Just sayin...

Trump says "We are going down not up" Re: cases.  Uhm... Sorry, wrong again, Sir.

Actually, maybe I interepreted it wrong when I read it.  It actually was a Bloomberg article, not BBC.  I took it to mean "runny nose" because it starts in the nose but it doesn't actually say that.  Here is the article:  https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-08/coronavirus-nears-fatal-tipping-point-when-lungs-are-inflamed

Why are people still taking cruises? I love cruising but I love my health more.

Oh, thanks, CO! One would certainly think if it "starts in the nose" that would mean sniffles unless otherwise specified!

Unless cancelled with a full refund, big sunk cost, paid in advance, as well as air in some cases. Roll the dice.

Washing your hands is much more effective than sanitizer so why was the sanitizer wiped clean while soap was in abundance? Some thoughts I had while grocery shopping.

People tend to want to 'do something' and buying a talisman is historically a thing that makes people feel better. Also, perhaps not everyone routinely uses the stuff and therefore might not already have some, I guess.

Washing your hands requires water from a tap, to do it effectively. Sanitizer is a lot more convenient if you are traveling.

Because you can't always wash your hands on the spot.  You can sanitize them immediately... Like say after you've used a banks ATM.  Those buttons and touch screens are a quagmire of germs at the best of times.

This is true but you figure they would have some for home.

Doesn't really explain the run unless people never really bothered to have clean hands in daily life before now. Why the run on one and not the other? Probably had a habit of using one and not the other, I'm betting.

I think people sometimes just get bloody minded about stuff like that.  They'll decide that it's all been overblown, that the Diamond Princess was a one off and that Princess Cruises will be super careful to guarantee it doesn't happen again.  Or maybe they were too late to get refunds and just decided to chance it.

Italy's reported nearly 1500 new cases today, and 133 deaths.  We're certainly going to be in trouble in Europe.  Mind you, Germany has around 1000 cases now and hasn't had any fatalities as far as I'm aware.  It's got more than double the number of hospital beds per thousand people that Italy has, so that's maybe a big factor.

Because, IME anyway, there's a lot more soap available in grocery stores than sanitizer. Everyone buys soap to shower (you'd hope! ;) ) but prior to this, mostly just frequent travelers would keep a stock of sanitizer at home.

Maybe so, perhaps my people are atypical. Everyone I know has at least one container of the stuff in their purse or EDC, and at least one in every car, as well as a couple huge costco pump-top vats of the stuff around the house.

They manufacture a hella lot more soap then they do hand sanitizer I would assume.

Logically deducing here: Most of us are out and about,  and not near a sink to wash our hands,  more than we are home when usually we only need to wash our hands after using the bathroom, before preparing meals and after preparing food as well as before we eat.  So less is needed so less is being bought up.  Right now I have a package of 8 bars of soap so I'm good for quite a while.  I only have one 236 ml bottle of hand sanitizer left and having a hard time finding more.

Exactly this. What do they NORMALLY do when they're not sure if their hands are clean in circumstances where there's no tap handy?

I don't really find a need for it when I'm not traveling, personally. Most places I spend time in will have a bathroom somewhere nearby, and in a pinch there are antibacterial wet wipes that I always keep in my bag (quite handy for women...). To me, sanitizer only really starts being worth carrying if I anticipate I'm going to be using a LOT of it.

But... why wouldn't you just wash your hands if you're at home, lol?? Sanitizer just about kills the skin of my hands, even the "gentle" ones.

I wash a lot, but if I wash with soap too much my hands get dry, plus whenever the dog wanders over and needs a head scratch I don't want to then have to go to the washroom before I can go back to coding. The Costco stuff seems to have quite a bit of something, probably aloe and glycerin (?) and it's not drying at all.

You're quarantined but gas is gonna get cheaper? Saudi starting price war? Oil futures down over 20%. Saudi's v Russia racing to the bottom?

Also, massive travel bans too/from Saudi Arabia....

Between driving a PHEV and not driving very far, I don't even know what the price of gas is precisely now. I filled up from 1/4 tank to full sometime near the end of 2019. I'm about 1/4 tank down so I guess it's time to freshen it up. Between the kid riding the bus to school and almost everything being in battery range, it's not been an issue for me directly.

Sadly, since the previously mentioned kid does go to the public germ mixing factory 5 days a week I don't see how we'll possibly not get the Corona virus eventually. Maybe I could take him out for a few weeks but that's probably futile.

Also a private Catholic girl's school in Bay Area to close for two weeks. Pentagon sending military police (which means they're armed) to Texas and California border crossing areas to support ICE. Lots of stuff going.

OTOH, the positive case in Gilroy, small community south of Silicon Valley, is now a negative. Oops. I wonder how many other false positives are lurking out there.
