Perhaps the best approach, rather than wondering why, is to simply recognize it and accept it. Just like you recognize that one factor in a woman's attractiveness is her boobs, one factor in a man's attractiveness is whether other women seem to like him. Now, you might think - hey there are good reasons for a man appreciating a woman's boobs, rooted in evolutionary biology. That's probably true. The reasons for this "crowd-effect" with male attractiveness are probably rooted in evolutionary biology too, just in a less obvious way. Some of the things mentioned above, such as "pre-screened," more likely to be safe, etc may be in play. Now, just because I see an attractive woman doesn't mean I automatically go for her. Particularly if she or I are already taken. The same holds true here. Being married or having lots of female admirers may boost the guy up a notch or two, but that doesn't mean at all that an attracted woman will actually make a play for him.
