I received my first Depo shot 2 weeks ago. I asked my doctor so many questions about it before I decided to get it. According to him, the only side affects that could occur were slight weight gain (up to 10 pounds) and that my periods would stop.

I have been doing a lot of research and have found endless horror stories from people on Depo. I swear that I already feel different, or maybe it is all in my head from all the stories I have read. The past few days, I have felt extremely moody and had a short temper.

The past 2 days I got very angry at my boyfriend over nothing at all. Last night while we were on the phone, he got another call which he said was important and said he would call me back in a few minutes. I yelled, don’t bother and hung up. I can’t believe I acted like that. That is not me at all! I am always very patient and understanding, and never ever freak like that. I don’t even know what I was thinking. Today he won’t even answer my call. I don’t blame him at all. I wouldn’t answer his either if he treated me in the manner I just did towards him. Could this be happening because of Depo?

I also read that Depo kills your sex drive. That scares me badly since I have a huge sex drive now as does my boyfriend. We have been together 4 years and are talking of marriage and I can’t imagine us ever working out if the shot changes my personality and libido like this.

Has anyone that has been on the Depo shot experienced this? I am in contact with my doctor, but was curious about anyone’s personal experiences out there.

BTW, I am taking Depo instead of the pill or anything because I have endometriosis and get severe cysts. My doctor said stopping my periods should hopefully stop the problems I am having, so that’s why he chose Depo for me.

I have been on the depo shot for 2 years now. My only very distrubing side effect is the weight gain. I have gained 10 pounds since I started and of course all around my stomach. However one good side effect is it can make your chest grow and I have went up a whole cup size. One pro to one con. I did notice irritability, mood swings, snappiness and depression when I first started taking it. I still feel it now effecting me but I would be more of those negative feelings if I got pregnant so I stay on it. As far as sex drive....The bf i had at the time I wasnt attracted to and I had always had a huge sex drive so I dont know if it was the shot or not although I blamed not wanting him on the shot. With my current bf I have absolutely no problem. But I do think it does temporarily change you. Stick with it it gets better. by your 2nd or 3rd shot everything will feel normal.

i read the horror stories as well, i researched a lot before i decided to try it.

i have nothing but good things to say about since day one, and it's been quite a while now. not one problem (knock on wood.)

i am sure some people do have problems with it, it is after all a chemical being introduced to your body, but i also think a lot of these "horror stories" might still have occurred with or without the depo-shot.

Unfortunately, I've lived through one of these horror stories and I do wish I would have researched more before going ahead with it.

Quite funny cause my doctor said too only 5% or so of women get serious negative side effects, so I tried it , but hey, when you are one of those 5% or so cases, sure ain't pretty. And the worst with it is that at least with pill if they negatively effect you you can stop taking it , but with this thing, by the time you want to give it a proper go and realise the devastating effects..it's too late to do anything and all you can do is wait for it to go away.

For me, it wiped out almost a year of my life, killed a good relationship and made me realise and REALLY believe what effect hormones do have on your personality and behaviour.

Could this be happening because of Depo?

from my experience, yes. You could also be one of the unfortunate 5% or so ....but I hope not for your sake.
