Different political affiliations, can it work?

As long as two people can respect each others' opinions, I don't see why they cannot continue a relationship. My mom was conservative. My step dad was liberal. They were married for over 40 years and I do not ever remember an argument about politics.

And for the record, I was in a relationship with a communist and I lived in a militant commune for a while. Power to the proletariat, Das Kapital, membership in the American Red Front, and all of that stuff. People go through phases of life, and just because you are compatible at 20 doesn't mean you'll be compatible at 30 if your life experiences don't match.

 

Major. You are the epitome of that old political cliché attributed to Winston Churchill: "If you are 20 and not a liberal you have no heart, if you are 30 and not a conservative you have no brain."

I lean left, my wife leans right. I generally vote Democrat, she generally votes Republican. Two reasons I think why we make it work:

 

1) Mutual respect.

 

2) Common ground: we may disagree as to which team sucks more, but we agree that both do, in fact, suck.
