Parents Moving Back Home, Buying A Washer And Dryer, but they want more.

After going through a lot of marriage counseling (Still are) and going through a hectic few years of some unfortunate and unavoidable events involving lost wages, lawyers and all sorts of crazy things, we ended up having our apartment suddently taken over by water damage and mold because of roof issues. My Family said we could move in with them and my Husband suggested buying them a washer and dryer because the one they use is breaking down and it makes their clothes smell. (We felt bad and were thankful for their help.) Then they said "Now lets figure out rent." At first they said $500, and of course we said, that is too much we would find another apartment.

 

Then they said "Okay $300, which I talked down to $200." After this we had another tragic event strike where the apartment that had water damage wanted $800 for the last month, but we haven't been able to sleep in any rooms and had to sleep in the living room. They low lowered down to $100, but we still have to pay $1,090 for the next 3 months in our current apartment prior to moving in with Family. They want to get a washer and dryer now though. Plus I am planning to go to school and work in the area. ( I Won't start work for a few months because it is seasonal. We are Moving 2 hours back home) and they want me to clean and take care of the house. I'm not sure if they are asking for too much or if we need to do everything we can to show our appreciation. Is this fair? Would it be better to just find an apartment?

If you had the financial means, would definitely recommend you find another apartment. It sounds like a much less complicated and stressful situation.

 

But if necessity forces you to choose your family's place, you'll need to show your gratitude by contributing in as many ways as you can. Honestly, $100 in rent, some cleaning and a washer/dryer sounds like a very fair deal. It's not what I'd ask of my kids, but it seems that's what's being asked of you.

if you're only having to pay $100 to live in the ruined apartment, then use that place only for when you need to be somewhere nearby. I guess the landlord won't let you out of the lease? I think you should contact whatever name or association is on your lease because it doesn't sound livable, so I don't think he can make you stay and pay out the lease.

 

Anyway, you're about to get crosswise with family, so I say pay the $100 or get out of the lease, and go find another cheap apartment near where you work. It's not worth it!

Firstly, I don't know what crazy redneck laws you must have where you live, but if you are forced out of your apartment by water-damage, not only would I not pay them a damn cent, I'd be hitting them up for damages and moving expenses.

 

I'm not clear on where you work relative to where your parents are? If its going to be massively inconvenient and expensive getting to work, then its probably not worth it.

 

But if your parents are offering you reasonable accommodation for $200 a month, compared to $800 for an apartment, then that may be a good deal.

 

Buying a Washer and Dryer, that presumably you will use, depends on how much its going to cost.

 

It's important to nut out all the details, who pays for what, how bills are split, etc.

Maybe set it all out in an email or similar.

Remember that sometimes people just have strange views on such things, and it may not always be possible to reach agreement.
