Sexual Innuendo: How to Respond?

Sometimes, women will approach me or I'll approach them and the woman will blurt out some sexual innuendo. Very often, this happens in situations where open flirting is uncommon.

For example, I checked out at the grocery store paying with my card. I guess I wasn't paying attention, and the card doesn't work, and the lady gets irate:

"you pulled it out too soon!"

I thought it was very funny, but managed to prevent coming back with any sexually charged reply back.

Another time, I was refilling my water bottle at a cafe. A cute gal cut in front of me in line "oh I'm sorry" she says. I say it's ok, I was having trouble refilling my bottle.

She says "you have to stick your finger in..." showing me how to operate the sensor. Again, I was very tempted to say something of a sexual nature. Instead, I just repeated what she said, again, barely suppressing a laugh.

Do you flirt back or say something of a sexual nature back?

Umm... I would suggest that you keep any comments to yourself if you don’t know these women. You just don’t know how your response will be appreciated - if at all.

Sexual innuendo is best shared between two people who have a relationship of that nature. A sexually inappropriate comment said to the wrong person at the wrong time may well be viewed at best as rude or at worst - harassment. You really need to know your audience.

It’s entirely possible that these women had no idea how their comments would be interpreted.

Innuendo is delivered with a twinkle in the eye. These women simply used terms where you found unintended sexual intent.

With the former, return the innuendo. If it's the latter, let it go.

I’m just saying, they were innocent comments entirely in context to the situation. The person who applied a sexual meaning to the comment may well have been you...

How would you have said it when you pulled out your card too soon?

How would you have said it when you have to stick your finger in?

Honestly to me they arent sexual at all...i would have said the same thing, or something like "You have to stay in longer" ,"you have to put your finger in"..And im sure you will interpret it sexually too

In your situations, I doubt it is innuendo. I suspect your mind works like mine....and that can get you in trouble. I'm always up for a "that's what she said" contest, or twisting a statement to be sexual. But with strangers? Forget about it.
