Why do some men make smutty jokes all the time? I met someone recently who's invited me to go on a date with him, but I find the constant references to sex off-putting, very juvenile. Otherwise he seems very together, so I'm not sure if he's just nervous around women and perhaps doesn't know how to be around them and is doing this with the mistaken belief that women find it funny, or if he actually is just a sexist jerk.

Input from both men and women would be good.

relax MsJ - he's just trying to make you laugh and this is the only way he knows how. Relay how you feel to him and if he continues with the jokes in bad taste then you have a problem. If he is ok otherwise he can easily be redirected to put the kaibosh on this bad habit.

I would find that off-putting too. (I'm a woman)

Next time, I would simply tell him that you find a lot of sex jokes tedious and then change the subject. See if he picks up on that and knocks it off.

Woman here. I liked smutty jokes when I was younger, but I grew out of them. He probably got laughs from young women when he was young and hasn't figured out that older women move on from that.

OP, can we hear one so we can judge his humor? I very much enjoy judging strangers.

Is it like this?

You: "Can you ask the waitress for some butter for my muffin?"

Him: "I'd like to butter your muffin :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:"

You: "<Face palm>"

Hahaha!! Ok, go ahead and indulge your judgeyness :)

Last night's conversation, during which I was talking about a family tragedy, and the need for further investigation by the police.

Me: "I decided to do some searching and I know some things have been overlooked."

Him: "I'll do some searching on your bits, nothing will be overlooked."

Yep, that pretty well sums it up. Not even vaguely funny unless you're in the 10 - 16 age bracket.

Well...in context of you talking about a family tragedy, his response puts in question his sensitivity and ability to properly read a situation.

(And, I'm almost willing to 100% guarantee that it won't be just for this, but for everything of a serious or sensitive nature.)

If that's not off-putting enough, and you still want to give him a chance, then I'd just face it and him directly, by asking something along the lines of:

"So...I'm not really sure, did you think that was funny, or sexy, or sophisticated, or mature, or elegant, or in any way appropriate in the circumstance, or...what?"

Let him speak for himself, and then do not ignore what he tells you.

Wow! Majorly poor social skills. Did he even hear what you were saying? Not a keeper IMO.

Not sure this is even judging - more like stating a fact.

Just ewwwww! He's not a jerk, just an idiot. Find someone that has some intellectual substance...for it's lacking with this guy.

OP, you should dump him for his abominable sense of humor alone, much less horrid timing.

As you know, there are plenty of funny guys. We are conditioned to entertain you ladies.
