Walking a mile is really nothing. Personally, I need at least 3 miles of brisk walking to count as physical exercise.

JuneL are you talking about 3 additional miles on top of your regular everyday walking? or 3 miles total? because that doesn't seem like much (the latter I mean)

I meant 3 additional miles. Actually I need to do brisk walking on a trail to count it as physical activity. I agree doing regular walking for 3 miles is nothing, let alone just 1 mile.

If you’re in college, why don’t you have healthcare access to your university health center?

Personally, I need to get a bit of sun exposure and keep myself busy (physically and/or mentally) to do the job.

I go to a community college and we don't have university health care unfortunately.

As for cost, how big is your place? If we're talking a 1 BR apartment you should be able to find somebody to clean it in a college town for $50 or less. Post an add on Craigslist, check out Thumbtack or TaskRabbit. Your fellow college students are also broke. Somebody would be happy to clean for not a lot of money.

I know when you are a broke college student, every penny counts but getting this place clean will boost your energy because the mess will stop sucking your energy & enable you to sleep better. It's also cheaper then a doctor.

I have a 2br to myself and it's costing a majority of my money. One of the rooms is an art studio which is a necessity for me, I need a room separate from my bedroom to be able to work and be creative. Getting another housemate isn't an option.. I've moved 5 times in the last year because of things like drug addict housemates, people stealing from me, & generally crazy behavior. I'm way happier living alone eating rice and beans constantly. But I'm currently behind on credit card payments, don't have internet, etc, all of my money goes into gas and food to go to school (it's a 40 minute drive from my house) so I can't really justify paying someone to clean for me

please consult a good psychiatrist
I don't really see how this would help.

Only you know what your priorities are. Personally I would have painted & been creative in the living room & moved some place closer to school.

The city closer to school is full of meth & crackheads, constant car break-ins, house robberies, etc. Regular kidnappings, disappearances and murders that go unsolved. My friend & her son were robbed at gunpoint a few weeks ago, the list goes on. I moved out of there for a reason. And that's the same reason I don't want a housemate. My county is the highest rate of drug addiction and murder in the province I live in, I trust few people here and let fewer get close to me. I choose living in the city that's next to the university (not the community college). It's a little better, there's actually some young people here that aren't strung out.

Today I had a realization that possibly the biggest source of my depression is I don't feel like I have anyone that I can really trust in my immediate life. I don't have people who are like me with whom I feel like I can talk about things going on with me. It's truly dawning on me just how isolated I've become. I used to have a very active social life. I do wish I had people that were close to me, whether or not it's a romance sort if thing. Maybe it's healthy for me to have some time for self reflection, even if it doesn't feel all that great. Who knows..? I'm just grateful for every day that I wake up, and to have a roof over my head and food to eat.

That is very insightful.

How are you going to fix it? What steps will you take to be more social?

Anything is better than nothing. Just because you need more longer and brisk walking that makes you feel better doesn't mean that the OP here reacts the same way to exercise as you do. Some people don't have time to walk more than one mile a day! Just sayin'..

I was just pointing out having a sedentary lifestyle can make one feel depressed.

There’re standard guidelines regarding the amount if physical activity needed for a healthy lifestyle.

Hi!!!

Just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone.

It’s ok to feel whatever you need to feel. Be sad, angry, depressed. Let the emotions flow thru body.

You can be whole and broken.

While social media and online communities like this certainly have value, I think they can create the dangerous assumption that happiness can be delivered, curated and dropped into your inbox.

Almost every good relationship IRL is a mirror, the energy in reflects the energy out. So to get the return you naturally want in closeness and companionship, you'll need to invest your own effort in building those bonds. I'd guess there are many organizations and affiliate groups at your school - sports, social, political, service, etc. - that would be good starting points.

Why not pick one and see what happens?

Well I actually cleaned more last night. My house is getting closer to being able to have people over. Also, working on raising my income level so I can afford to go to the yoga studio nearby & hit up the local dojo. Ive realized I'd rather be around fighters and stretchy people than the alternative.

My lifestyle is far from sedentary. I don't play video games or watch TV and I walk everywhere except to and from school.

How do I get energy without the help of substances? I really need some help.

Working out is what helped me the most, both for regaining the energy and focusing my thoughts on productive things in life. I have acquired a routine. I bought myself quality gym wear and developed a habit of visiting the gym three times a week, after my job. I made it a top priority in my life until I regain my energy and settle other aspects of my life.

It worked for me. I felt better about myself, I was more self-confident, and after some time I felt almost like all the worries evaporated alongside with my workout sweat. It's worth trying.

Or, if you are really not a fitness type of person, you can try to walk more and to spend at least an hour a day doing some exercises at home.

Sometimes vitamins help because you might be deficient in something that you need. Maybe, you are not getting enough quality rest. I am a high energy person and take my fitness seriously but I can definitely notice if I do not get enough quality rest. Good Luck
