Would it strike you as odd if your girlfriend said that she 'loved you to the moon and back' even though you are two fully grown adults in their thirties?

 

 

It just strikes me as unusual way of expressing love since the term is typically used from a parent to a child.

No.. basically means more than anything or more than anything else.

 

In it's a wonderful life George makes reference to Mary wanting the moon.. he will lasso it and pull it down.. means he would give her anything...

This form of greeting always struck me as a bit childish but now you guys have said that it's not uncommon, all is well in that case!
