My boyfriend is broke isn't he?

After many years of dating my bf who has struggled with money and with my nonfinancial help and financial help from a family member, he tells me he is all settled financially so he is ready to live with me and marry.

 

Well here are the facts...

 

he has paid off all but $1,000 of current balance on cards which will be due by 2/1 of course this will go help some for food, gas etc he buys during the month

 

he has paid all other bills including rent

 

he has only $300 left in checking account after making the above payments but will get paid from work and ssi during the month which I will assume needs to pay his monthly bills again on 2/1

 

he has a small savings account he adds a few dollars to each month (b/c I insisted)

 

He still has cash from the family gift about $20,000.00

 

he now says he is so settled that he wants to take me somewhere warm for a long weekend and I say

 

REALLY????

 

He is retirement age. In my head having almost no assets and a few hundred in your checking account is essentially BROKE!! Am I wrong? if not, I need to tell him to hit the road!!

Yes he is broke. Whether you tell him to hit the road or not, is up to you but unless something drastic changes, he's hovering near poverty.
