lovephreakout Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 so this may sound silly... but i dont know how to pack a home lunch for my BF's son. he's in 2nd grade so i had some prep in 1st grade and i think i am getting the hang of it. but towards the end of last school i started giving him money to just buy cafeteria lunch. that was ok last year.. but this year it is up to 3$ a lunch... 15$ a week! i am running out of ideas for lunch to pack him and i dont want to keep sending him with p&j sandwiches or lunchables.. today was a meatloaf sandwich..i'll see how that goes.. any ideas???
Merin Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Well My Kids are wierd so I have to be careful... My baby just started Kindergarten this year, so no lunch packing for her BUT My oldest is in the 3rd grade this year... When she was in second grade believe it or not the school she was then attending didn't have a cafeteria so I had to pack her lunch... With that said... she doesn't LIKE PB&J, OR pizza... she also doesn't like spagetti... Sooooo I bought her things like carrots with ranch, applesauce, pudding cups, variety of fruits, soup in a thermos, hotdogs (yeah she eats them cold ) LOL but whatever, she likes them. It can be difficult packing a lunch for a little person... especially if you're packing things you're pretty sure they aren't going to eat... doh! So change it up now and then... give him fruit or soup in a thermos... or if you have left overs from dinner (like spagetti and he WILL eat it) then see if he can use a microwave at school and pack him that.... or mac and cheese.... Thank God my Girl goes to a school now that DOES have a cafeteria... it's 1.85 a day so not to bad and it's saved me from the drama of packing a lunch... whoo!
ThumbingMyWay Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 what merin said.... we do the same thing...try to mix it up a bit also....surprise them with a little treat or a note to have a great day.... my boy is at the church daycare so they have a microwave...he fav is wheels and cheese...LOL daughter is in 1st grade and has the hot lunch...but she has to bag it 3 days a week (trying to teach her about money and spending it). We normally pack things we KNOW they will eat.

ThumbingMyWay Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 IF my Girl had her way she would be eating lobster and cracked crab for lunch D:eek: H! .....my daughter wont even touch seafood....oh wait, she likes fish sticks....hahahaha
Author lovephreakout Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 the problem really is that he is such a picky eater.. plus what the hell do i pack everything in??? i have been using little sandwich baggies.. but thats getting expensive too.. and there is no microwave there that he can use. sometimes that boy comes home and he ate was the chips.. or part of the meal... its so frustrating.. thanks for the soup in a thermos idea.. thats not that bad of an idea at all
RainyDayWoman Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 IF my Girl had her way she would be eating lobster and cracked crab for lunch D:eek: H! oh my god, i thought my nieces were weird! the 4 and 6 yr old eat all kinds of seafood, adore spinach and artichoke dip, and even eat calamari. someone said to the 4 year old "you eat that!? do you know that it's squid?" and she said "who cares what it is, it tastes good!" and they said "but all those legs, yecchhhh" and she paused and said..."well, they aren't using them anymore, so what's the big deal? they aren't walking around in my tummy!" then she laughed hysterically at herself and ate another one and gave a big, open-mouth smile at the jerk who was trying to convince her that her food was gross. i love that kid. she is so much like me that it scares my sister. i don't suggest giving kids these things to take to school, though... why not get ham, turkey cheese, bread, pbj, and let him pick what he wants for the day? you can even ask him the night before. add some fruit, maybe a snack, and definitely a note. ..i loved my mother's napkin notes--usually by lunchtime i was feeling homesick, and they always helped get me the next part of the day. and can't he have a lunchbox? they even have insulated, softer ones now.
Art_Critic Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 One word "lunchables" My step daughter used to love those. They even have pizza lunchables
quankanne Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 she paused and said..."well, they aren't using them anymore, so what's the big deal? they aren't walking around in my tummy!" :D great come-back! LPO -- try packing a tupperware or one of those Glad "fake tupperware" dishes with crackers and cheese and lunch meat. I think you can also now get yogurt in a tube, though I'm not sure if that has to be refrigerated. I think for the most part, little kids like being creative with the food they eat, so if you pack the components (cut up veggies, cheeses, sandwichmeats, crackers, etc), they can put it together they way they like.
IhavenoFREAKINclue Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Can't you just ask him what he wants and pack it. I doubt he's gonna as you to pack him a pastrami and swiss sandwhich. Suggest all the things that they said and compromise. This isn't your son, remember, so don't act like his mother and tell him he need to eat his veggies, that's his fathers job. But be the cool girlfriend and give him things he wants for lunch.
alphamale Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 oh boy....this brings back some bad memories. When I was like in 3rd and 4th grades my mom used to give me the most terrible lunch to take to school. here's what she did: she'd get up and make me breakfast but she would fry up 2 eggs. one I had for breakfast and the other fried egg she'd place in between two pieces of white bread. this so-called "sandwich" would then be placed into a plastic baggie and of course the egg would still be hot and create steam in the bag. well, anyways, by 11am or so i would take this thing out of the baggie and the bread would be all soggy and the egg would be disgusting. most of the time i'd just throw it away and eat the bag of Fritos. Yuck! And I couldn't trade the damn thing cause there was no demand for a fried-egg sandwich. But later when I got older and before my mom passed away we had some good chuckles about it.
