semi Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 I heard a song today that I hadn't heard in a while. It's been about 5 months since I got dumped and I am doing alright, but when I heard this song it was like she had walked through door unexpectedly. I was shaken and my stomach knotted up. It is real strange how your senses can affect your emotions and then your emotions can affect your physical body and then your emotions again. Also some good music to listen to if your feeling blue is The Magnetic Fields. The lyrics are so cliche and incredibly sad that they make you feel a little silly about how your feeling and actually can cheer you up. Not that it is silly to feel depressed but these ex's don't deserve that.
Blackfrost Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Some people (myself included) are extremely receptive to linking music with people and events. I have several songs each that remind me of exact moments with different girlfriends throughout the years, as well as other songs that immediatly link very visual images of places and times in my life (even as a kid) the minute I hear them. A large chunk of my music collection is cd's that were specifically bought, because certain songs held such strong connections to different times. I even have one mix cd of really old tunes that distinctly brings back memories of running errands in the car with my mom (when i was 5 and 6 years old) and the smell of her old car, and my perceptions of the world around me. I guess this should have been my first indication that I was going to grow up to be a very visual person. Hence I ended up working as an art director on different hollywood films and video games.
JS17 Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 I've had the same experience as you Semi. I'm a little indie rock chick from nyc so music is a huge part of my life. When my ex dumped me I had to stop listening to music for two weeks because just about everything made me cry. I even had a near breakdown in a bathroom in a bar right after we broke up because of a song that came on...now I laugh at myself for that. Kind of like Blackfrost, I believe music is the soundtrack to your life and everything I have in my vast collection reminds me of something at some time. There are certain albums and musicians/bands that I've stopped listening to because I get that punched in the stomach feeling when I hear them. When I'm down I'll try to listen to more upbeat music to kick me out of that sad state. Once in a while I'll give in to the feelings and just listen to the saddest things that I have. When I'm angry though I always give in and listen to some Mclusky or Against Me or Cursive, I get it all out, kick some butt and feel better.
samski3409 Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 I'm a little indie rock chick from nyc my favorite kind,BTW!! music has such an impact on my daily experiences.I've got the ipod with like thousands of tracks on it,but i still prefer to make actual mix tapes and listen to them on my Walkman that i've had for years. nothing like that mix of songs that go so well together as you walk the streets of NY.i don't even have to have a destination.brings back floods of memories at every corner.
