Talking to a guy I met online. The conversation over the phone went well. As we were wrapping it up, he suggested to meet. I said that it's a good idea since we seem to have a lot to chat about. He responded "if anything, you'll get a free dinner out of it". I'm the type who is the furthest away from dating for free dinner's sake. Am I right to be mad at this comment? Or should I not pay attention to it?

I hear you. I'm like you and would be a bit put off by the comment....but not enough to be mad. I'd let it go and see what he's like as you get to know him. I think one of the problems with OLD is that it's too easy to write someone off too quickly.

I would say it's one of 2 things:

1) He's been burned by this in the past, and may be a bit bitter

2) It's just a bad attempt at self-deprecating humour

I think it's a bit of a downer but he was probably just trying for self deprecating humour. I would give him a chance but be on the lookout for negativity.

Pete and smiley pretty much sum up my thoughts. Give him a chance but be aware of the potential for negativity. Hopefully it won't be an issue.

It's a fairly common joke. You would have been better served addressing the comment when he made it & setting the record straight that you are not looking for hand outs but all in all it was just a joke that fell flat. See how the date goes but perhaps rearrange it to something cheaper or free, not dinner.

It was a simple joke and not a commentary directed at you personally so I wouldn't take it as one.

I don't like it either but it's not significant enough to be a dealbreaker. Give him a chance in person.

It was a joke. You were supposed to laugh.

just tell him that for the first date you would prefer to pay for your meal

Should have responded cheerfully with "Not necessarily....I don't have an issue paying my share of the bill (smile)."
