Would you date a man with violent convictions (not domestic violence)?

Context: I'm not a violent person, never been in a fight, never arrested, not even so much as questioned by the police about something I witnessed.

But - I'm going to go against the flow here. I have all the respect AND admiration in the world for men (or women) who stand up to bullies and even if it means 'getting physical'. I live in a 'blue state'. I mention that because there is a tendency here for the legal system to slap down people who do what 'should be done' when those people unfortunately don't have the 'authority' (usually meaning a badge). I have seen instances of people being convicted for assault for doing what the police SHOULD HAVE DONE or would have done if they were there. Just because a particular person has convictions, I wouldn't have a knee-jerk 'he or she is a dangerous person' reaction. I'd want to learn the circumstances, especially if in their dealings with me these people seemed morally upright. Batman and the Punisher are comic book characters. Rambo in First Blood was a movie character. But I firmly believe that there are people In Real Life who, on a much smaller scale, do what those fictional characters would do - and then get in deep legal trouble for it.

No way. Huge red flag. If you ask him to explain it he will not tell you the truth anyways

DUI maybe. Pot possession? Maybe not a bad assault

Unknowingly, I dated a man like that for over a year. He disclosed his past only as we were breaking up and things fell into place for me. He wasn’t violent towards me at the time, but was very psychologically unstable and an addict. His conviction was for a violent assault, which was expunged from his record, so did not show up when I (thinking I was being smart and careful) ran a background search early on. Our relationship was tumultuous and break up even more so, culminating in stalking and threats.

As a result, for me personally: I will never knowingly date a person with any criminal record, any drug history or any serious psychological conditions. I also really advise you pass this one by.
