justsomeguy Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 I want to know how much something I said might have sounded like a pick up line. I would never use a pick up line because they are stupid. I ran into this girl that I hadn't seen in years. I had told her I liked her before after she flirted with me years ago. When she saw me after all these years I didn't recognize her right away when she said hi to me as she walked by my table. I had a mouth full of food so I smiled and nodded while I was confused. I realized who she was after she walked by. After I finished my sandwich I went over to her table and sat down and said "Well I can't very well say nothing". Which I meant because it had been so long. It wasn't something I thought about, I just said it. But she said "what?" and instead of explaining I just repeated with "I said .... etc". To which she didn't question any more. We then proceeded to talk breifly before I had I had to go to class. Side note, I didn't try to exchange numbers with her because I thought I wasn't interested in her, DOH! Which it turned out I was. Anyway. For some reason later at some point I wondered if she thought I was trying to use a pick up line. Which would make me feel really stupid. Because pick up lines are really stupid and only people that have no understanding of real social interaction use them. I hoped that she just asked me to repeat what I said because it was worded in a complicated way, but that is how I talk sometimes. She probably couldn't directly understand a definite meaning from what I said, since it can mean more than one thing. Thanks!

I think the chances of that are good, because I'm not really sure what you meant by that even after you've explained. I think I know what you meant, but your wording was really strange.
Author justsomeguy Posted September 4, 2005 Author Posted September 4, 2005 "I can't very well say nothing" would directly translate as "wow, I have to say hi"
Jayhawks Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 I wouldn't sweat it. There was nothing offensive in it and if you two don't hook up it won't be because of your sentence structure.
Art_Critic Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 "I can't very well say nothing" would directly translate as "wow, I have to say hi" I think she was confused .. "I can't very well say nothing" is confusing..Followed by really nothing. I had to read your post 3 times in order to understand it and what you meant by what you said.. If it confused me and other posters it most likely confused her.
Author justsomeguy Posted September 4, 2005 Author Posted September 4, 2005 I guess most people don't hear the phrase " I can't very well ..." very often. It's something that is part of my selection, but I rarely say it. For example: " I can't very well leave you out here in the cold" " I can't very well drive my car without the keys, now can I" That is how I hear it used. I'm not worried about it anymore. It's just interesting that people didn't get it.
crazy_grl Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 "I can't very well say nothing" would directly translate as "wow, I have to say hi" That's what I figured you were trying to say. And it's a weird way to say it. I don't think it was the "I can't very well part" as much as that it's not clear what you're talking about. Something like "I can't very well ignore you." might have been clearer. But since you talked more after that, she probably didn't even stop to think about it that long...
