He started dating this friend of his....by 6 months she was hinting marriage or engagement....He told me he just wanted a GF and I totally understood where he was coming from. Too much too soon. So OP I see he just wanted to be honest about it...that he just wants a GF. If things go in the direction of forever, then so be it. He not completely writing off the idea...he's just not wanting to think about it right now. As they say there are no guarantees, except death and taxes.

But I don’t know what we will want as the relationship goes on and idk if this is his way of saying he doesn’t see a future at all or he hopes to see a future someday. He said the “I want us to be together for a long time” and “he can’t wait to see what the future holds” but I’m worried he’s already being negative about anything becoming more serious in time, as normal relationships do. I may be reading him wrong. He could very well be saying this now out of normal early relationship jitters but want to get more serious in the coming months I’m just not sure what is normal for these things
