I know the answers will vary, as every relationship is different. But, in general, how long does the honeymoon phase last?

In my experience, it's 1 year to 1.5 years. Here's why:

- By then, the two of you will have celebrated every holiday/special occasion at least once (Valentine's Day, both birthdays, Christmas, etc.)

- By then, the two of you will have checked out many/most of the popular venues in town (nearby restaurants, etc.)

- At that point, you likely are seeing each other regularly (3-5 times a week) as opposed to the very beginning, when you probably saw each other once or twice every week

I think the relationship can retain its "new car smell" for 2-2.5 years, but the "butterflies in the stomach/can't wait to see the person" phase lasts less than 2 years for sure.

Do you agree? What's your take?

Your time frame is correct, but it is driven by hormones that usually fade by 18 months.

In my experience 3-6 months. Sigh.

Dating 2,5 years here and still in our honeymoon phase.

To me butterflies and honeymoon phase are 2 separate things. The butterflies are a rush of adrenaline and serotonin. The honeymoon phase is when you idealize each other.

It's biological. The brain stops producing Dopamine.

In my last relationship 3 months. But I think it's because I had become so jaded and tired of getting rejected and dumped that I had kinda given up by that stage. Mine was more of a grateful experience, like " can't believe after 3 months, we are still together and he hasn't dumped me after sex!"

In general no more than 6 months, to me anyway. As I'm unlucky enough to enter a new relationship right before Valentines and my birthday.

Not to mention that its a pretty quick tour of my small town.

I am semi-recently out of a roughly 1 year relationship that was, at times, fraught with jealousy (on her side). But I will say this: the night before we broke up, I have never in my life felt the feelings of warmth and love and contentment that I did that night. And the next day, I asked her to delete my number, so to speak.

So a time frame is hard to say, IME. Scientifically, studies show that cortisol and Nerve Growth Factor peak at 12 to 24 months. But screw science. It lasts as long as context and the couple let it.

External factors that heighten the drama of a relationship while preventing mundane familiarity, such as long-distance or affairs, can stretch out the crazy phases of love.

That is not exactly a good thing.

I felt that to end after we moved in together. We moved in together after about 2 years and a few months. It went a little bit more downhill after the wedding too :p Dont get me wrong, we are still happy. But it's a comfortable happy and I'm not getting the big words "can't live without you" "I would do anything for you" etc. anymore sigh

I hope so! It sad to think for some the feeling fades so fast after 3 months. After 2,5 years with my BF we have not changed one bit. He leaves my home at 7h and at 7h05 he calls to say he misses me already.

I was watching LivePD last weekend, and some woman had called the police out on this older guy because he pooped his pants and then emptied them all over her bathroom. I'm old, so my first instinct was I felt sorry for the guy -- and now he's all over TV, poor guy. But it was still funny.

So the police asked him what happened and iterated that the woman said he pooped and she didn't want him there anymore (honeymoon over). The camera is panning into the bathroom, where the mess is scattered. The man goes, "Yeah, she's REAL picky about cleanliness." And the police said something deadpan about how most people are too picky for this mess. Then the guy started explaining: "It started as a fart, but it was more than a fart." And the police are keeping a straight face, not sure how, but they would repeat stuff back and were keeping him talking because they knew it was going to be hilarious on tv. And then he said, "Yeah, it was something beyond a fart. Really, it was way beyond a fart."

LivePD has a fun Twitter community that watch live, so we were all having a great time. But I still feel bad for that guy. I hope he doesn't have cable.

Oh man, I missed this episode! I watch LivePD all the time!

I’ve seem some real gems on that show.

So funny!! (And some of the cops are hot too, I enjoy voyeuring them)

The show “Jail” is funny too, but that hardly comes on.

the "can't wait to see the person" phase

We've been together for 9 years and I still get this, especially when we've been apart for a day or more (e.g. work, travel, etc).

But yeah, the new relationship energy started to dissipate around 1.5 to 2 years for us. I think that's when you start to be able to really see the other person for who they are - not just how they act on dates once a week, but how they handle life's stressors and relationship problems, warts and all. I do think that going through that and making the decision to accept the person for who they are generally leads to a stronger relationship overall... but the rose tinted glasses certainly fall off by that point.

That being said, OP, based on the other threads you have made, I think you in particular might have issues with your marriage that may be worth hashing out with your wife and/or a counselor.

Well, A&E will show that episode either before or after the live one either Friday or Saturday night. In central time, the show is on 8-11 and I tape it but then go catch up while it's still live after I'm done working. I notice there's one before and after. Seems like that part came on real late in the episode on Saturday's.

If you want to start getting on Twitter, a good one to start with is @pascosheriff because they do a lot. And there's not just one thing to follow. I mean, there's the official one but they don't do that much and then just a lot of people hashtagging LivePD. But if you start following Pasco, it will lead you to others and you can follow all the police participating, plus some of their K9s have their own twittter, which is what made me stick with it. My twitter, I mainly follow dogs and animals and then crime, and I ended up by accident following LivePd and discovered that following police and sheriffs is a whole lot of dog stuff too. Not just the K9s but they all seem to love animals and so it all blends together.

The Pasco Sheriff puts people to bed at night with their "9pm routine" which is just them encouraging people not to be out getting in trouble. And it sounds so boring but they ask people to check in when they've locked up and when people check in , they send in a photo of their pets or kids or something and it's just a huge community.

I think 2 years sounds about right for the cap. There seem to be so many couples that fail at the 2 to 3 year line.
