Would you cosign a loan for someone you have dated 6 months?

I think you can just leave it for now. If she hints / mentions it in a vague manner like before then just shrug it off or say "yes, you would need to find someone willing to co-sign". Wait for her to ask you outright. Then say something like,

 

"I'm sorry but I'm not comfortable co-signing this loan for you. Many couples break up due to financial issues and I don't want to jeopardise our relationship by complicating it with financial business"

i think it isnt a good idea and not soemthing i would expect from someone i was dating for six months.....no matter how serious we were.........deb

No comment on whether OP should co-sign. However, don't assume that the gf having a mortgage makes it easy to get any other loan. In my experience the banks' lending formulae are based on, among other things, how much free cash flow the borrower has to pay the 'next' loan. So already having a mortgage would make the gf LESS credit-worthy. For example, when I bought my first home, the bank would not lend me the full amount specifically because they calculated I couldn't make the payments even though I had no outstanding loans at the time. I was fortunate in that a family member informally gave me a 'second mortgage' which I easily paid along with the first mortgage from the bank.

Ok, you all have convinced me this whole thing is fraught with risk. I kind of hinted that I would be open to doing this with her. How so I say no with causing problems or hurting feelings?

 

 

Glad you are seeing reason. Do not say anything for now. If she brings it up, just say that you thought it over & you don't want to ruin your relationship by mixing love & money.

You throw down a red flag and say "Upon further review..."

 

Just be straight with her. You've thought about it and decided it isn't the best thing for you or your relationship...
