Here's another valid, socially acceptable, and gender-neutral reason for gun ownership:

I think if guns are your hobby I would find it important to teach your kids about gun safety and how to handle a gun properly as to kill the curiosity if you know what I mean.

I agree if you are strongly against this then this is an incompatibility issue. He's not going to stop sharing the gun hobby just because you are so against it.

The initial picture made me uncomfortable, yes. But if the kid has been taught or educated properly, which it appears he has, then I'm less uncomfortable.

Now if I found out guns were just laying around the house free for him to play with anytime, that would be sickening to me. But knowing how responsible my BF is with everything else, I doubt that. He also has a 17 year old daughter that is extremely well behaved and responsible for her age. So that tells me his parenting must be fine and I shouldn't question this any further.

That's pretty intense with the hand gun. My gun instructor does these competitions too. That's all he does...makes enough money teaching so he can go shooting, mostly across the border for obvious reasons. He told me surprisingly, Texas has one of the most strict gun laws in the country. I believe a lot of people have a misconception about guns and gun ownership. It's the illegal ownership (criminals) you need to worry about.

OP, IMO, the concern is valid and working through it hopefully will help with future concerns.

Rereading your OP, it appears the man is exposing his son to a variety of generally male-focused interests, as is customary for fathers with their sons. Some of it might stick and other stuff will be forgotten.

He sounds like an involved and loving parent, at least from your observations. I'd go with that.

Just looked it up and 11 states have gun storage laws, a handful of municipalities do as well, and 27 have laws penalizing gun owners who allow guns to fall into the hands of children. So being irresponsible with guns around kids is not only dumb but could land a person in jail.

You are probably right, I know that now. 1st picture in my head was a kid playing with a gun and hurting himself. It took me a minute to think it through more. I know my BF isn't dumb enough to put his kid in a truly dangerous situation. My 1st reaction was the kind my mother would have if it was me.. Lol. It's he and his buddies that go to gun shows and car shows together. Naturally the kid probably wants to go along for guys' day.
