Do men use their friends to get info about a girl ? Or use a mutual friend for an ex?

I was hanging out with my ex's friend and my friend and he brought up how my good my ex doing after his surgery, how he's alive and everything is ok, he brought up his cousin too and was like waiting for me to mention my ex. (My ex and his friend recently got injured in a car accident) So I'm pretty sure he knows I went to the hospital to go see him. Was he asking for my ex? I don't have any communication with him anymore since I changed my number. But all of us live close and every time I've seen my ex, he would stare at me for a long time or follow me around the neighborhood. He did that literally all the time, but we never spoke due to the argument we had.
