Today I was substitute teaching in a charter school in the city. I was with a class that was very behavioral. Basically they did and said whatever they wanted, they can't raise hands to speak they shout out loud, they're rude, etc. I had a literal confrontation with one kid who was very mouthy, I was angry and I walked out of the class to the office after he let me have it with both barrels. I got assistance from the policeman and the assistant principal. After a very painful day, I brought some of them to the gym for transportation dismissal.

As a sub, one must remember that they are not one of the staff and you must not talk to them as if you are on staff or that you are friends, some came up to me and said they heard I had a bad time with that kid Frank. I said yes, some of them said he only behaves when he's in Mr. Jones's class. I turned around and see Mr. Jones. I had seen him earlier that day in passing while he was ushering the kids to and from, we just said hello here and there in passing and I introduced myself as the sub for the 4th grade (yes, this kid in question was a 4th grader). At that moment, our eyes locked. He was younger than me, I'm sure, but it was one of those moments. You just feel ... That. I smiled at him, he at me.

He had a scratch on his forehead, I asked how that happened which I'm sure everyone has. He said he had an accident in his garage. Oh ... He said he heard I had a terrible day with that kid, I said yes. He said he has his good and bad days, he was probably off his meds. I said it was a terrible day with him, he's confrontational. He and I walked down the short hallway and I said I was going back to the room to get my things, he said good-bye. And we parted ways.

We kind of sparked at that moment, just a sparkle that was there for a moment or two, then it was gone. I probably won't see him again, I don't even know his first name. But that felt ... Nice after a very stressful day.
