I understand that it's "New York" - one of the most expensive and glamorous cities in the world... but if you are trying to impress women with your money, well... I'm not sure what to say about that. It's just not the kind of values that I would want in a life partner...

There are too many women (going by the threads on here at least) who are hopelessly in love with a guy who spends his days on the couch playing D&D Even in NYC, there are many many guys who busting their azzes in the service industry who do just fine with women. And you think it is your career that is holding you back? I think you should instead be taking more pride in what you do. Confidence is very attractive. Own it, no need to embellish. And if you want to change your career, it should be because you find some other way to pay the bills to be more rewarding to you, and not because you feel the chicas will dig it. No woman worth dating will reject you just because you aren't a big shot at Goldman Sachs, and this goes even for the women in NYC. While I do agree with OP about the tendency towards materialist outlooks in NYC (by both sexes honestly), I think part of the solution is to change his mindset not his job. If you embrace the job you have and that you will take over your family's company at some point and have the freedom to do private equity etc, you are lucky. Smart and cool girls will see it that way. They will be impressed by your devotion to something family-oriented and the passion for that as well as your dedication to where you want your life to go. That part sounded good. Don't be embarrassed (why!?) of working for your family's business. So look at it like this, this current position of yours will weed out girls that have materialistic interests solely or primarily or immediately or some combo thereof. It allows you to attract a girl for who you are. good luck
