My husband and I are older, still working and just trying not to think about the fact that we don't have any real savings and walking into that good night is not such a distant reality.

Is that discussion not this forum?

Find yourself a certified financial planner. Don't just talk to the investment person at your bank. That person is trying to sell you things. Talk to somebody who can help you budget, talk about investing, talk about saving, talk about insurance products you may need & elder law in general. Timing will also become an issue -- in that if you wait until 70 you get more money from Social Security in the USA.

First thing may be to take a long hard look at your budget to see where you can possibly squeeze out some money to save. At this point every little bit may be critical.
