Last week I was on Facebook and some woman message me on Facebook and friend request me. I decide to add her then she began messaging me so we started chatting on Facebook. This person then asked me for my phone number but I gave her my Google number instead. She told me she a model and she was on a seminar in Nigeria but she lives in California. I became suspicious as I have heard of Nigeria scams. So far this person has not asked for money but still thinking this person not legit. I got photos from her. She says when she gets back from her trip she wants to meet up and have few drinks. I don’t know what to think of this. What would you guys do?

Of course it's a scam.

Give it a little bit of time and soon she'll tell you a story about her account being frozen or being stuck somewhere and she needs a bit of cash to be wired to her.

I have one of these on my facebook too. Some how she got through my security.. She had contacted me back in June. Skype and everything. After 1 month the money request started to unfold.

1. Visa (US) naira 350,000

Husband naira 480,000

2. itune $100

Known scam tied with you Credit Card

3. Rent $1500 USD

Now I told this girl I wasn't doing all of that. Visa US is $160 USD or Naira 60,000. She's way off on her figures. Also I got a copy of her Nigerian Passport they spelled May wrong.

So far things have turned to no more skype, no more video calls, phone calls, text to cell. All stopped because I didn't fork over $1500 USD.

I've at this for a few years now with these so called woman this one not fake though. Following her through or daily lives. Now she doesn't want any money from me she has fallen in love with me hook-line-sinker. She told me she lived on her own. Nope hear someone else in the room on video chat she shown me it was her younger sister. Before the $1500 she had live video of where she works at. Studio Make-up Artist / Nail Salon. Everyone there was waving at me. Now that's all gone because I didn't send the $1500.

Today she pays for contacting me herself Whatapps is free for her cell to cell and cell to video. She can't stay on so long though. Prior to the $1500 request she could stay on for many hours more than once per day. I feel someone else was getting paid off as well.

Today we are friends, what's gone is all the "I love you", I miss you" things like that she said because I wouldn't give her the $1500. She said what kind of man am I not to pay her rent.

I got her to the point now Sept to call and talk to me. Now and then she does video. Harsh life in Nigeria. She was suppose to come out to be with me 3 months ago always saying she's working on it. Never is..She's okay sometimes good to share some common interest.

I've learn a lot about their culture, they each chicken for their meals. They don't watch a lot of TV. They use generators because power always goes off there. I think she cares about me. I have another I know for 2 years that one never ask for money. But can't tell me her DOB or where is she.

Funny how this is going on today and not much talk about it..Facebook ones have high roll of money to invest n you the client (stupid, sucker, idiot, lonely person) we're called all sorts of names. By them behind out backs. If you get a real Nigerian woman you lucky as the rest are either kids, men or elderly.

Some of them can be really nice the younger woman who in this case she is. Make-up artist by trade. She got me involved in her life. I don't mind it but I do not want to be asked for anymore money told her this. She said when I am tired of her to let her know. I told her I am not tired of her that will never happen. I get Really for answer.

I have nothing to loose sometimes she understands things told me about Afrobeats music from her country not bad to listen too. 5 hours difference, but when I go to work she sends me Good morning, when I am done from work she sends me Hi how was your day at work today! Gets real personal.

She also sells fine jewelry like large expensive watches..

For u OP that told you she wanted to go out, it will never happen.

It's most likely a scam. I've had a couple people contact me, and since they are a friend through long-ago school friend, I immediately assume it was someone from back then I once knew, though not sure I remember the name. There may be more than one mutual friend, so I thought nothing of it. These guys could be scammers or could be guys trolling the friends list for girls and using FB as a dating site. Once I determined they were not old friends, I deleted and blocked. I then noticed the mutual friend has some 900 or so friends on her list.

I was new to OLD and caught a couple of these. Neither asked for money outright, but within two weeks (and of course they are traveling/overseas/deployed), there was drama, can't reach home (but can somehow text me) and needs me call their accountant to check their bank account because there's some crisis. This is when I investigated scammers and found identical pictures with various names and identical, very wordy texts/emails. I have no idea how the rest would play out had I called this "accountant." I found it incredibly odd to trust a virtual stranger with something like that, and worse, their child was with a caretaker that couldn't be trusted to manage this issue...go figger.

Of COURSE she is a gorgeous model in California! Have you tried dropping her pictures into image search? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

And now she/he has had the time to peruse all your personal FB stuff and has your name.

Unfriend now.

Unfriend her few days ago. The part when she says model is what throws me off. Models don't hit up guys online unless she has a major issue with getting men.

No, it's not a clever scam. It's just an ordinary scam.

P.S.: Yes, you did the right thing.

Any random person that friend-requests is ignored. Any person, from any foreign country, asking for my number and then asking to meet up is a SCAM.

You had me at "Nigeria."

Too funny....

It reminds me of the dumbbell friend of mine that I saved from wiring 10K to some "woman" from the Ukraine who magically picked him from the billions of people walking the earth to be her dream man...

She just needed a way to get to him....

I had to do the same thing with my own mother and an "army veteran" who friended her on Facebook. To this day, I think she might still believe he was real.....

A coworker of mine got scammed by the income tax scam where they threaten you jail and arrest and all that crap if you don't pay what you owe. As it unfolded in front of me, I thought she got some bad news from home and it was a private thing so I didn't get involved. She was very upset, freaking out. She took off, so I thought someone is in the hospital (her father in law had a heart attack before). She came back in tears, and that's when we all stepped in. This person had all her personal info so she thought it was real. She sent them 800 bucks, and she was ready to go see her husband to get more money. I told her right away it's a scam, and my boss took her phone and chewed the guy out on the other end. They really had her scared. The scammers have left messages on my phone many times threatening I would get arrested lol. I did some reading and those scammers go as far as coming to your door impersonating as the police.

OP if the person had not said Nigeria would you have understood this to be a scam?

Not really. But I have heard lot of scams mainly from Nigeria. I Google searched her photos to see if they appear somewhere else and I did not find any other places.

Since you would not have recognized this as scam but for the reference to Nigeria you need a bit more skepticism in your life. Don't believe everything or everybody you meet OL
