Echo74 Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 I received a message from a guy whose profile states that he lives in Manhattan, NY. Here's the confusing part...when I looked at my gmail message list, in particular the notification of his message, it shows a city which is near me...like 5000 miles from NYC. None of the other guys messages show their city. What are your thoughts? Is there a way a person's profile would state one state but yeah be in another? Curious.
Michelle ma Belle Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 When doing anything online you need to always be mindful and careful. All too often when it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is. How are you communicating? Email only? Get on kik and ask him to take a LIVE pic. You'll know in 30 seconds if he's legit or not. It doesn't solve much apart from him being who he says he is but it's a start. 6
act00 Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 I am always wary when they don't list their actual city. This is typically fraudulent or someone who likes to text women but not actually meet. My experience is men who claim to be in the military and deployed, so they list their home town or something, or they travel a lot for business, so basically unavailable. It doesn't take long for them to involve some crisis where you have to help them out in the financial arena. No one has asked me for money, but I have been asked to check a bank account or contact their accountant or something along those lines. I've had guys tell me they're moving there soon or just moved away and didn't update, but upon pointing out the error, they don't update their profile. I'd call it shady and forget about this one.
BaileyB Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 You should always be careful when meeting someone online. And yes, it's very suspicious that he would live so far away. I have wondered if some people send likes to everyone, regardless of little details like location. I would pass this one over without a thought, he's either phishing or it's not an actual person.

None of the other guys messages show their city. What are your thoughts? Is there a way a person's profile would state one state but yeah be in another? Curious. Yes. Liars do this. Oh sure, some guy may be working in a different state than the one in which he says he lives, but that is quite rare--and why would they want to start something that has to end when their work is done, unless the woman is also just looking for short term, NSA stuff. However, this is a common trait with scammers. They will get google phone numbers with area codes in your area to make it look like they are local, but in fact, they're sitting in an internet cafe in Ghana or Lagos running a scam down with stolen pictures. The scammer who contacted me said he lived about 40 miles from me. It wasn't until I laid a trap and he walked straight into it that I discovered that he was in Ghana. In the meantime, do a google image search on the photo. Chances are, it's stolen from a model's portfolio. Also, google his profile wording. 1

The members of the U.S. Armed Forces are the #1 victims of having their photos stolen and used to create fake profiles for scamming. I had one guy contact me with the photo of General Ray Odierno, who used to the one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Obama administration. I work in news, so I knew who this man was and that no military person of his rank would be on a dating site, let alone while he was also married. 1

Larryville Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Should I be suspicious of OLD gorgeous guy? Curious why did you refer to him as gorgeous... anyway that is you first clue to move on. 2

Michelle ma Belle Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 (edited) That's why you should meet people in OLD right away and not spend weeks and weeks with back and forth emails. Arrange to meet him. He obviously won't be able to if he lives 5,000 miles away. I've met some amazing men who did not live in my city yet we still managed to date however long or short. I think it's fine to entertain people outside of your geographical location provided its something you are open to BUT you need to get past the texting and onto video chat ASAP if nothing else. Why anyone would continue to text endlessly with people LD without ever picking up the phone and skyping is beyond me. There are ZERO excuses why you can't video chat these days thanks to free apps like Whatsapp and of course Skype. Anyone giving you the run around regarding this isn't worth chasing. Period. Make this your mantra!! Edited August 25, 2017 by Michelle ma Belle
smackie9 Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 The best policy is to do a video chat before you meet them or at least have them call you. If they say the speaker is broken on their phone, report it. It's definitely a fake profile. And always let someone know, where you are going and who you are meeting. For predators, OLD is easy pickings for finding victims. 1

That 5,000 miles away means he's in Africa. Whatever they put down for a local zip code will show where they're suppose to be but really the can mask their location using fake zip code. In gmail you could look-up the source path of the email and see where the email started from using the ip header of the email sender. But it if you said it came in 5,000 miles that is where he is from. Nigeria or Ghana those two countries have so many scammers ling therr. Do not answer this faker, block/report is optional and remove. 2
preraph Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 If his email IP location doesn't match what he's telling you, why not ask him about where he's living and where he works and how long he's been there and where is he from originally. Of course, with smartphones, they may show the city wherever your phone number is if it shows anything.

If you tried to track my IP when accessing the at work I'm always in Manhattan, no matter where I am at that moment. But that being said, there really isn't a reason to take the risk.
Miss Spider Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Fishy location aside, you should be wary of gorgeous guys on OLD like you need to be suspicious of a free Xbox. Very likely it's a scam, criminal, or severely damaged. 1
thefooloftheyear Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Sounds like the female version of the crap some guys buy into about the gorgeous girl with the enormous breasts from the Ukraine that can't wait to spend the rest of her life with them, but just needs 10K to "get her affairs in order" and buy a plane ticket... If you can believe it, I know an idiot that actually fell for that scam... TFY 1

Software online well it's web lookup you can track them (real network term you can trace them) Still not worth your time to do. I've ran into these scammers myself. I've learn about about them how they do their fake promises. Your behind a domain firewall or blue (box for web security) if your in a corporation in NYC can be on exchange server if they're not using anything else. But I've worked in IT for a long time done a lot of networking.. But these people faking and sealing anyone likeness and saying they love you, etc.. it's all BS. Do not send them money don't think for one moment they would ever travel to you. This is the reason why: if you send them what they need. Then why would they leave! smackie9 Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 As the saying goes, if it's too good to be true, then it is. 2
alphamale Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 What are your thoughts? my thought is that OLD is a waste of time for most people 3
kendahke Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Record a video, upload it to YouTube and make it restricted only to whom you give the link. Tell him to watch it. Ask him something specific from it so that you know he watched it. Wait 3 days and look at the analyticals. It will tell you in which country it was viewed, how long and how many times. That is how you find out where they are.
Author Echo74 Posted August 25, 2017 Author Posted August 25, 2017 Curious why did you refer to him as gorgeous... anyway that is you first clue to move on. Because the guy in the profile pics is really handsome. At first glance my heart skipped a beat but then I saw he was across the country from me. I was suspicious because there are literally thousands of beautiful women in NY. His profile was too good, PhD, make over $150k, etc. I just tried to look at his profile and now it states unable or whatever. Hmmm...very shady. Yes. Liars do this. Oh sure, some guy may be working in a different state than the one in which he says he lives, but that is quite rare--and why would they want to start something that has to end when their work is done, unless the woman is also just looking for short term, NSA stuff.
