Echo74 Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Youtube has lots of videos with people playing with the scammers. Some are ridiculously funny! 1
SevenCity Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 You gotta know that a lot of these scammers are very smart, and they can be really convincing as well. They have plenty of methods to prove that they're "real". Most people will fall for this. That's why there's people out there who make a living out of scamming people. Just keep in mind that you can fake literally everything nowadays. Some of the scammers will get paid to meet up and then pay a prostitute or w/e that pretends to be the girl. They do this instead of just taking all their money just so they can milk more money from the person in the future. So yeah, my point is that some scammers are willing to go really far just to make money. You don't have to be an idiot to get scammed. Another common thing they do is that they chat with someone for a few days, and then they say that their laptop/car/phone broke down and ask for a few hundred bucks. Surprisingly many people actually pays them. I just don't understand why anyone would give money to someone they never met? I must be an anomaly as there is no situation which would cause me to send anyone anything. Biggest scam I fall for is when the women don't look as good as their pics lol. 1

You'd be surprised what lonely people who were convinced that love had passed them by and they were destined to live out their lives alone will believe. These scammers are professional con artists--and con artists take in so called "smart" people ev.er.y. day. Look at Bernie Madoff or the Lincoln Savings and Loan Scam. Until you've been in the shoes of one of the victims, don't cast aspersions on them. 2
CptInsano Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 I was only on OLD for only a month, but two scammers hit me right away. (I made a mistake filling out my profile that made it look like I had money.) They were fairly obvious though and clearly not local. I played with them a little, and when asked where I lived I named a blue-collar neighborhood where an uncle of mine had his house. There was silence after that.

I'm a sceptical person by nature and always feel that someone is trying to get one over on me until they prove me otherwise. Not a great way to be, but it has prevented me from being a victim. I feel for someone if they are so lonely or inexperienced they feel sending money to a stranger is normal. But using a bit of common sense goes a long way in preventing these scams from being successful.

Echo74 Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 My elderly mom simply does not answer phone calls from numbers she doesn't recognize. She says that if it's important they'll leave a message. She might be 90, but she still has her wits about her! 1
Miss Spider Posted August 28, 2017 Posted August 28, 2017 (edited) Hi. I was wondering if anyone could help. I have heard online dating is filled with cam bots and how bots usually have 3 pics, then it changed to 2 pics, and they are now using pics of regular girls to seem normal. How do you differentiate between a bot/scammer and a real person? Let's say she has a profile filled out and it's all grammatically correct. Is there any other profile content that suspect? What can she put in her profile to leave no doubt to you she's a legit human being Edited August 28, 2017 by Cookiesandough

basil67 Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 This is no different than in politics on social media sites. People have no clue just how many fake twitter followers, Facebook profiles generate stories (on both sides) to drum up hatred and fear for the other side. Political and psychological manipulation For many of these guys it's not about manipulation. Instead, it's about earning money through advertising. I was hearing about a whole lot of 'Fake News' websites which are currently writing outrageous things about Trump. They more clicks they get, the more money they get from advertisers. These websites are often not even based in the US. I heard the same guys also had a Bernie website, but they dumped it because they weren't getting enough clicks/money for it. Basically, the more outrageous their "information" is, the more clicks they get and the more money they earn. They have no political affiliation, it's simply about making a site which will get the most internet traffic. 1
Popsicle Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 Thx, POPS. Did you give up online dating?hard to take seriously and it's getting to the point where it's just depressing I did. But mostly because I realized that it's too unnatural to me. Funnily enough, it was watching a few episodes of "The Bachelorette" that made me realize that. 1
spiderowl Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 Yes, I've noticed an increase in scammers on dating sites. They cut and paste from real users' profiles and use fake pictures. There are a lot on OKCupid, not sure why. 1

Sighs Spider, I always assumed you were a female, so you mean male scammers??? How can you tell Hi Cookiesanddough, no I'm female. The male scammers are getting more subtle but are still fairly easy to spot. I'd best not say on a public site but happy to go into detail if you PM me.
Author Larryville Posted August 30, 2017 Author Posted August 30, 2017 The male scammers are getting more subtle but are still fairly easy to spot. Whether it’s man or a women the keys are: They have (1) One photo particularly “stock photos” no discernible background. Links to other sites for you to check them out Barely made out profiles Limited social media presence People also get caught up in Paid vs Free sites and to the scammer it does not matter. I think the practice of fake profiles are generated by the sites themselves to encourage participation and interaction.
