How do you separate the one you like from her friend?

Ran into 2 women but was only interested in one. One of them wanted to move on, but the one I was talking to was interested in the conversation with me.

What would you do in that situation?

They excused themselves, so I walked over to the one I liked and asked her if she'd like to go out with me sometimes. She started with excuses, so I wished her well and walked away.

Being interested in a conversation with you doesn't translate to wanting to date you. So there's nothing you could have done differently.

Better luck next time.

In this case she probably wasn't interested, period. Generally speaking, going out with a group of guys, or just a good friend who is able to hold a conversation, is indeed preferable. Otherwise you end up with situations where you exclude her friend(s), which is less than ideal.

I played the role of the friendly conversationalist for my single friends many times, even when I wasn't single myself.

This is exactly the right thing to do. She wasn't interested so you move on.
