Gold Pile Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Several years ago I downsized and became almost set for life. I'm to young to retire so I work gigs here and there. Pocket money is nice but the dating opportunities of being out there is more important. For 4 years I have worked a seasonal gig at this time of year (tax time). Nearly all my colleagues at this gig are female. Some of the women I've met have become "permanent" members of my little black book of booty calls. Beyond that 2 have become true friends. Aside from dating the above mentioned, I've dated a few more that ended up being one night stands, or non scores. The job consisted of doubling checking others math and putting a several page print into a folder, then into a file box. When the box was full, it was quite heavy. I, being the strongest, would then place a full box on a fairly high shelf. To be sure there is one lady this year who is capable of lifting a box. She and I are the only ones. I was paid more for my strength, she also should be paid more. Last week the boss announced big raises for everyone except their star performer....me! Called it equal pay for equal work. The non lifters were now being paid as much as the heavy lifter. Failing to convince them to correct the injustice, I quit. They called me Friday, I learned that the above mentioned strong woman quit after one day of lifting boxes. They then leaned on a 65 year janitor to come in and lift the boxes...he angrily retired at the end of the week. They offered me an increase in pay to return. I'm not going back because I'm a person of integrity. I miss the dating pool. In fact I had lunch with one of the ladies Saturday.
bluefeather Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 There's gotta be something else out there for you with a similar pool.
salparadise Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 So what do you think is fair with regard to the non-lifting women being given equal pay to a man who lifts boxes? Obviously you feel that lifting boxes makes you worth more, but some would probably argue that being physically stronger is an inherent male characteristic, not an actual skill, and therefore doesn't warrant a pay differential. Some might even argue that lifting boxes should be considered less valuable. IOW, this is an interesting example of how gender equity is difficult to define or achieve. Was lifting boxes part of your job description but not the others, or was it just assumed? Did they think they were doing the "right thing" when the equalized everyone's pay? Was that in response to a complaint, or out of the goodness of their heart?
