IMO groupon/coupons/BOGOFs are fine for later dates, but not for a first date or first meal.

I dated a guy who was a drugs rep. He used to ask me to accompany him to events where he did a presentation about a new drug (to doctors) followed by a meal or a buffet. This was all paid for by the drugs company.

He never took me for a meal any other time. He never even suggested "going dutch".

I also dated a guy who only treated me to a bar snack after he'd had a win on a fruit machine.

I dumped them both because they were tight-wads.

I get what you're saying. I mean it's great to show frugality, but a first date may not be the best time.

Men have this idea women find men who have money and spend it at liberty sooooo impressive. I really don't, but with this in mind, the only thing that would concern me is that they guy isn't trying to impress me as much as he is trying to save money lol

Come on?! Really???

Yes, really.

if a man is using a groupon on a 1st date then it sounds like he shouldn't be dating because that would signal things are tight financially.

It depends on where the Groupon is used.

If some dude uses a groupon on the first date and goes to Applebees or some cheap @$$ chain, yes that would be tacky.

Although it was not a first date, a woman I dated (who made very good money BTW) Took me to this cool unusual restaurant for dinner and it was close to $200 (WITH THE GROUPON) . This is a restaurant neither of us would have ever gone to but she wanted to do something nice for me. I appreciated that. Her using the Groupon in this case was cool.

I told her one time that I loved crab so she arranged for reservation at this place.

This is exactly why there are so many broke @$$ people because people over-extend themselves being prideful.

And this…

I would be most concerned and turned off if my date treated the wait staff badly or cheaped out on the tip.

Frankly that is much more important than a freaking Groupon usage.

If it was for a helicopter ride or a 2 hour cruise in the harbour then ya groupon away!

I'm old skool...I appreciate it when a man wants to impress me. I don't mean candle lit dinner or anything like that, but for a couple of craft beers or a coffee and a cookie at Starbucks...please don't groupon that.....so tacky.

I'm not a penny pincher so it would be a case of incompatibility if the guy is one.

I got to talking with a girl I recently started seeing and asked if what was cheapest first date she ever had. I asked her if anyone had ever taken her to Mickey D's or Olive Garden. Or worse, if anyone had ever broken out a Groupon. She told me never, but if he did, it would be over right there and then, no matter how much she liked him. Now I would NEVER EVER use a Groupon on the first date (maybe second :D) but I thought that was a bit harsh. Ladies, what would you're reaction be? Any ladies ever had this happen?

I don't care, as long as he has a job and isn't one of those guys who's super paranoid about a woman using him for money.

I don't understand. A groupon is a coupon right?

You're impressing a woman by showing her you know how to waste $?

In her mind, your desire to save $10 at the expense of your first impression might be a demonstration of how little money you actually have. You're saying to her "I really need to save this $10, it's a lot of money to me -- I know I'm trying to make a first impression here, but I really need to save this." rather than "I couldn't care less about $10, that's nothing to me."

Women typically like money men with a lot of money.

Ya I agree

If anything it shows the guy cares about his finances = good thing!

But if he cared about his finances to begin with, he'd have money and he likely wouldn't be in a position where saving $10 would be worth sabotaging a date over. The guy who uses a coupon likely just aspires to be in a good financial situation, likely he isn't in one as it stands.

I don't have a strong opinion on coupons, but clearly the fact this thread exists shows that some women do. And men are usually at their mercy so they have to let the market decide. That being said, if you think it might be a strike against, perhaps it's better to just suck it up and pay the $10 and save the coupon for when you're out with your friends.

Ahem, I've never taken anyone on a date that I didn't pickup the whole tab. Dutch is not honorable. A DATE is supposed to be special so it should be a nice place. Especially if you asked and set it up.

If you're in college and money's tight that's a different story but......

I agree. Groupon cheapens a first date and I would lose interest if a guy paid on the first date using Groupon. I interpret that as he doesn't think I'm worth the effort. If he used it after a few dates, I wouldn't mind that much because I figure if we are going on dates then I like him.

There are plenty of nice restaurants where you can get a home cooked meal for $10-$15 at a nice little place. It's not really the amount spent it's more so the effort invested in the date.

Some girls are ok with a Groupon date, others ain't. Same way like some men have no problem always paying, while others do. Just find someone like yourself.

I've taken them to Denny's LOL.. Use all the discounts I can use so what. Groupon dates are fun as well, $12 to $24 for two at Ethiopian Restaurant is a interesting date indeed. You can buy or do whatever you want for a date. You can even go dutch too. No body really cares what you do. I cook them meals comes out a lot cheaper too!

I really think its about hwo a date treats you rather than what is in his wallet...

i almost have a form of reversism......im not a fan of a guy who has wads of cash im less likely to date that guy..........than i would be to date the guy who is broke....im not disrespectful of people with money ......i respect good work ethics......hard working peoples...in all career distinctions....

but a guy flashing cash is not the guy for me.....i go dutch or i pay for the whole thing....i pay my own way..i have fought for bills before.....i have had wads of money before....i mean a lot.....it was the most miserable and dark time of my life......i gave a lot of it away ....and i knew rich men...some were ...horrible..arrogant....cold....cruel.....bring on the coupons not the dom champagne and yachts not my style....ill have a fifty cent ice cream and walk on the beach......good conversation and respect from a guy in work boots and a blue shirt.............deb

Yeah, Groupon is a bad idea for a first date or even an actual "date", IMO. It's fine for everyday fun activities in a LTR, but not for special occasions or initial dates with a new partner.

On the other hand, I love the entertainment card and we do use it all the time, even for special occasions. I'm not sure if it's just a difference in countries, but the entertainment card feels a lot more subtle and less cheesy than Groupon. You just scan it at the end like a loyalty card. I don't know about Groupon in the US, but where I live, it's REALLY cheesy. There are limits to what you can order, you need to call ahead and tell them you'll be using the Groupon deal, and sometimes you must present the coupon immediately upon arrival. Complete turnoff IMO.

LOL! This is a great thread.

When I was dating a guy used a coupon on our first date. So here's the deal, I wasn't angry about it but I did find it a bit "unromantic" and it crushed any passion I might have had. TBH it made him seem silly. There's a time and place for coupons.

I'd rather pay my half on a first date (I have always offered and meant it) than have him use a groupon. Just reeks of tackiness to me. But then again, I've worked in the service industry and had a horrible impression of Groupon from the other side (the service provider's side) - basically they were offered by my employer but we took the hit to our paychecks - so it's unlikely I will ever use a groupon.

I wonder if any men have been "turned off" or lost interest due to a woman using a Groupon on a date.

Why does it matter, given that the OP's question is specifically about what women think? Men and women sometimes have different preferences, which isn't necessarily a terrible thing. I also wouldn't want my male date to show up in a dress and heels, if that helps. ;)

Simple curiosity. It's completely neutral to me in that it doesn't make me think any more or less of a woman. I was just wondering if any men would find it unappealing because it's "tacky".

Men should ALWAYS pay for the date. I know this is will not be well

received but I have never nor would I ever let a lady pay for anything

on a date. It has nothing to do with her ability to pay, I simply think

that it is the man's place to pay. Is it old fashioned??? Not to me....

Sounds like my SO. He's fine with me paying for informal stuff like grabbing takeaways or coffee, but "date" dates are always him.

IMO, unless you are cash strapped and can't afford taking someone out for a date then why would you not want to put your best foot forward ?

Isn't impressing her and making the best impression part of what a first date is about ?

I would also feel that if you can afford it and pull something like that on a first date then you are just negging her to see if she bites, that would be kinda lame and self defeating.
