If you're in the grocery store, just make a comment about what she has in her cart. (Stay away from sexual innuendo though, don't talk about "the melons in her basket"). If she is into the conversation back, then introduce yourself to her and ask how her day is going. She'll know what's up. At this point you will have a decent idea of whether she is interested or not by whether she seems enthusiastic about the conversation.
