Recently my long distance ex dumped me because he lost interest and the relationship was too much work for him. I never really got the impression that he was super crazy about me, but I figured since he said he loved me and enjoyed me visiting him that I was being paranoid (silly me). Anyways I met a guy through an online app and he seems very smitten w/me. He isn't a creep and we have good conversations and we message back like crazy. We plan to meet up soon and yes he is a real person. How do I not fall too fast? The thing that I'm afraid of is him just walking out on me w/out even trying to fix things.

You keep yourself busy and talk to/date other guys at the meanwhile to distract your attentions towards this guy.

First you realize that the OL guy from the app is not "real" until you meet. Right now you are smitten with the person you think he is. You have no idea who he actually is.

Second you repeatedly remind yourself for the first few months that "it's too early for that" every time you think you have feelings for him.

After the 1st date you can think about the 2nd but no farther into the future. After the 1st week, you can think about the next week. At least for the 1st 6 months I tried not to think longer ahead then we'd been together.
