I skip over profiles where the main picture is them with someone else, too.

Unfortunately after doing more reading on this, women who read online dating profile articles from other women in many instances give the exact opposite advice many guys might give or comment on.

Also people don’t take into consideration when reading and processing information things like age, race, ethnic origin, religion, class, where someone is from (region: in the US east coast vs Midwest), educational level, lifestyle choices.

Just like this site, I sometimes wish the people who posted here would reveal (I know some do) or we knew their age because a piece of advice given to a 20 something is never going to be the same or necessarily good advice to someone 40, or 50 years of age.

So if a guys posts a picture of him with his golfing buddies, did he upload the picture to say...

"I'm looking for a woman who likes golf"

or

"I'm looking for a woman who will tolerate my love of golf"

I guess maybe both.

His "advert" to the dating world is showing everyone who he is.

In OLD there is no other back story to refer to, so people will assume if he is posting pics with his golf buddies he does actually play golf and that he is presenting himself as a golfing man.

Similarly if a person sees themselves as an intellectual, a bit of an introvert and a loner, then it is better that they do not post pics of that one time they went to a club and hated every minute of it, on their profile.

That is not who they really are and any woman attracted by that pic is going to be a bit disappointed when she finds he is not the party animal she thought he was.

Elaine I get this. I guess for me if I were going to post pictures that “truly” represented me at this stage in my life all my profile pics would contain pics of my grandkids. I adore my grandkids.

I’m an onion peeler and I like to slowly learn about people, having been a photographer, videographer I process more of the overall picture than the subject.

Part of me that would attract me to someone is their own ability to tell me and communicate to me who they are and what they are all about. People who can’t share parts of themselves as you get to know them would bore me to tears.

I have met people who put all sorts of “stuff” in their profile, and litter the profile with pictures of more “stuff” let’s say they took a cool trip to the Grand Canyon, and put that they “love to travel” on Match and some sites you look at someone’s income and that does not jive with their honest ability to be able to afford to actually travel… UNLESS they get with a dude who is willing to foot the bill to take her to nice places. Or if someone’s job does not allow them so much time off to travel. Some folks jobs, work situation, kids, family situation does not jive with their actual ability to do all of the “fun” things in an OLD profile.

I personally have run into some many women where their pictures were nothing like the lifestyles they truly led, was more a fantasy than reality.

Yes I know L tends to freaking overthink every damn thing…. I get that is many times NOT a good thing.

I don't think it matters that you overthink (in your view). You just find other people who think the way you do.

Other people do not necessarily think this way, and MOST people have layers over time, so ultimately, most people will wind up with someone who is right for them. It's all good. As Wayne Campbell said: "Led Zeppelin didn't try to make everyone like them. They left that to the Bee Gees." :D

Sometimes not being some general "everyone's taste" totally acceptable/non-remarkable vision isn't the best way to be. Sometimes our pariculars are what will lead us to the right person for us, not the generic right person who does the generically appropriate things, in an online profile or elsewhere. For instance, I personally love someone who DOESN'T really give a rat for looking "just right" or following convention all the time. I like the guy who can go off the beaten path; I find such a person truly unique...and sexy. And I have never had trouble finding such a person, though he was, each time, not the absolute norm. We just sort of seemed to find one another in our mutual bucking of "but you SHOULD do X or Y."

You know Cookie, this could be a cool group drinking game. Go onto a OLD site, browse thru profiles and if you see any of these on a profile you have to drink!

:D

How's that filtering working out for you?

Posted (edited)

The objective of it is to avoid dating anyone I wouldn't be attracted to or compatible with. So pretty well, I'd say

Pic of you skiing

Pic of you skydiving

Pic of you doing outdoor activity in general where you're really far away

Pic of you doing that pensive/quizzical face

Pic of you looking all serious and "hard"

Pic of you pulling a ~seductive~ face

Pic of you in the gym mirror

Pic of you doing a yoga pose

Pic of you lifting up your shirt to show your abs

Pic of you in Halloween or other cosplay costume

Pic of you playing or holding a guitar

Pic of you making making duckface even jokingly

Pic of you giving best man toast

Pic of you giving some kind of speech

Pic of you on stage doing improv

Pic of you taken mid-drinking beverage

Pic of you drinking or doing drugs

Pic of you at a party/bar/club/bonfire completely wasted

Pic of you where I have to turn my head more than 15 degrees to the side

Pic where most of your face is obstructed

Pic of you wearing anything ed Hardy, affliction, Abercrombie, or Aeropostale

Pic of you with fake mustache (including, but not limited to , on a cup, a stick, your fingers, or sharpie )

Pic of you in car with sunglasses

Pic of you in scrubs and stethoscope and saying you're a dr (we get it, you get ladies)

Pic at machu freakin picchu (already said that)

Pic of you wearing a fedora

Pic of you summiting a mountain

Okay lol I'm not being completely serious about this xD

Pic of you lighting your own farts, not a very good way to impress ladies, but...well...you may impress SOME one...right?

I did a little experiment with my profile when I was using OLD.

1. I changed my profile from the usual "Getting To Know You" stuff to a random diatribe involving my favorite music and movies. I got more than three times as many responses when I did so.

2. I changed my profile pic from a head shot to a full body pic. I got about a little less than twice as many responses. I used the same full-body pic I had in my profile originally.

It gave me a little more respect for the OLD process as it appeared as if some folks actually cared read the profile.
