Friend zoning is a woman's way of assuaging her guilt. If a woman can get her man to be nice and stay friends, then she gets to preserve her pride and ego...the two most important things. She can tell herself "See...we really were never meant for each other. We should have stayed friends and never been romantic. But look, he is forgiving me and staying friends with me so I don't need to feel bad about breaking up with him. And if I keep him as a friend, he will maybe always be there to go back to if all my future relationships fail. He can be my insurance policy." 1
