Have had many my self with my kids, I bought my daughter a hampster, she is so sweet and dosent bite. Of course this is the second hampster in two years, The first one only lived for 6 months because i think she was older than what the pet store told me. The one my daughter has now is a little over a year old. They live between two to three years. If you go for the hampster ask the person in the pet store when they received the batch of hampsters. 1/2 price ones are older and can be tough to get them use to human contact. Try to buy one that hasnt been in the store longer than two weeks. That means they are very young. And will be able to accept human contact with out biting. Also go for a female they are less likely to bite, Males are know for biting. They are not hard to take care of. When my daughters first hampster died she was also a basket case, so i went out and bought her another one.

So pretty much like Humans? JK JK JK!! After I talked to my BF now he has me freaked out to get a hamster or a bunnie.. My house is freaking ghetto hot this summer, I don't have AC and now I'm afraid the hamster/bunnie will be cooked upon arriving home Bah! I dunno what I'm going to do... however My Girl was not at all amused today when I told her if she wanted a pet I would scratch behind her ears and we'd call it good... I'm pretty sure I saw her do this when I was laughing all by myself.... IF I get a bunnie or a hamster I will call it Tiki fo sho... BUT My wee peeps will call it sparkle, or lovey or princess... sheesh! LOL Thanks you guys I'll let ya know how the melt down goes if I don't get either one D :eek:H!
soccorsilly Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Get her a rabbit. They're cool. Oh, I though you were talking about ...you know...."THE" rabbit!
lilian Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Just from the hamster's perspective: get a rabbit. When I was a child I had two hamsters. One of them once escaped and from then on hated to be in the cage. In fact it hated to be in the cage so much that it used to try and bite through the metal to a stage where his mouth was bleeding. They're sort of wild animals and most of all love to run around. I find it really cruel to have them run in that weel. Rabbits (especially those small ones, don't know the name) are much more domesticated, plus they live longer. Or, how about a cat?
Heavenlyflower9 Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 My 6 year old son has had 2 fishes and two rabbits. Not all at the same time! Whenever he sees a fish or a rabbit......"There's my fish...... he did'nt die! ..or there's LILO my rabbit... she's okay." It's normal for kids to go through things like that in life. I know i did! I would'nt get a hamster though. Rabbits are okay... but do require alot of maintaining. Rabbits need their exercise everyday...so alot of room to run around....cage starts to stink just after two days of cleaning it... other than that they're cute! Just tell her it's not possible right now. When she's 8 get her a puppy, so she'll really learn how to be responsible. Plus they usually live longer. I promised my son he'd get one. He won't forget that i did! Good luck!

Heavenlyflower9 Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 When she's 8 get her a puppy I guess i just liked the number 8. My son is stll 6. Sorry! Let's try.....it again! Get her a puppy then! that rhymed!!

I did talk to my Girl about things again last night and AGAIN this morning.. LOL she's killing me! Now I'm thinking maybe a water turtle? LOL sh*t! I love Dogs but when we moved from our big ass house into a townhouse, we no longer had the yard for a Dog and we're not home long enough to keep a Dog there.. just seems mean to me. The fish and hermitt crabs... they don't live long enough LOL My daughter is VERY tender hearted and when one of these more fragile pets die she mourns forever and dwells on things... My BF has a little yorkie that she loves like mad... so she gets to see his dog BUT yeah I know it isn't the same for her as having one of her own at home... Still thinking of maybe a water turtle... her bday is tomorrow and trust me when I say she is all over me night and day about getting something... damn! LOL
Outcast Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Remember that turtles can carry salmonella. The kids will have to wash their hands every time they handle the turtle. The Louisiana SPCA suggests parakeets: Parakeet birds entertain children and can be wonderful pets. They are vocal, active, and can be trained to sit on a finger plus their diet is easily purchased at a grocery store. A parakeet’s average lifespan is 8 to 10 years, but some can live as long as twenty years I also read praise for rats who are said to be clean and gentle.

I didn't know they carried salmonella I had 2 Turtles before but they weren't water turtles.. one was a box and the other was a russian.. I also had 2 Parakeets AND a cockatu.. LOL I loved my Cockatu he was cool, BUT they are so freaking messy! A Rat... LOL I'm afraid of even Mice...

Jed bit it's owner, then he bit her 3 year old son. then he bit Ed. now they're both dead. the seller said "oh, no, very docile, no biting." two days later they were both in the ER. i see no reason to keep rats. ugh.

Author Merin Posted July 21, 2005 Author Posted July 21, 2005 Originally posted by SoftDrink that's what i said! okay all this rhyming is getting way to schizo for me! have you decided on anything yet? LOL I'm going to check out the Water Turtle after work today.. I know she would be good to go with that.. like I said before my house is ghetto hot this summer and seriously I'm afraid of what would happen to a bunny or a hamster in the heat.. PLUS I know how my girl is.. she would want to take the Bunny/Hamster to my Dads house all week while I'm at work and I know straight up he wouldn't be all about that.. LOL damn it's hard enough getting thier little butts up in the morning to go and the eye rollin I get for what they want to wear for the day vs what they ARE going to wear.. LOL not to mention the crap loads of stuff they insist on dragging over to my Dads to play with... Ugh! Last thing I need is the argument over her wanting to take a Bunny/Hamster to my Dads and reasoning with me that it's to hot for the pet to stay in the house...
clandestinidad Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 I dont know if anyone already said this but......Turtles harbor salmonella and it can be very icky icky to deal with....and I dont know ANY child, or adult for that matter, that would wash their hands EVERY time they handle it or mess with its "cage" I had a brown floppy eared bunny from 4/5th grade to senior year of High school!!!! I loved him Dont feed bunnies lettuce or cabbage, etc...it makes them sick w/ diarrhea...leading to dehydration I gave Hershey half a banana every night (he always had some bunny food pellet stuff throughout the day), and he'd hop back in his cage when I put it in there. We had an enclosed pool area that he'd hop around in every day pushing a beach ball around and playing with it (he never fell in the pool...I told him not to cross the rim when I first got him, and he never did, even when he'd push the ball in the pool!! haha ) Anyway, if you clean out the cedar shavings every week or so, then it doesnt stink too bad. OH, they love oats too...but not too much, cuz you dont wanna blow 'em up!!!! hahahahah Guinea pigs I've known have made awful pets....they have "razor sharp fangs" (a lil monty python there, sorry) and bit us HARD...a bloody mess, but really "just a flesh wound"

Well I think fo sho the Bunny/Hamster idea is out... I've thought about the Water Turtle and still may do that this weekend for her BUT damn just the set up for that is expensive! Sheesh LOL I already spent over 100 bucks on her Bday presents and that doesn't include taking her little butt (along with my other wee peep) to 6 flags tomorrow and Red Lobster for lunch (My oldest loves that place) Thanks you Guys for all your help, thoughts and giggles
brashgal Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 Bummer, I missed the party! You probably ought to try being around a rabbit before taking one home - I'm not allergic to cats but I am allergic to rabbits, my eyes itch just thinking about the little critters. One of my son's friends has a turtle and right next to the cage is a big bottle of Purell, rule is you either wash your hands or use the Purell after you touch turtle or his stuff.
