Merin Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 So My Oldest Peep is turning 8 on Friday.. When I asked her what she wanted for her Birthday she said "To be rich" uh.. yeah LOL So I asked her what she wanted that was more tangible.. she said "To be Famous" WTF!? Dear God, she's not yet 8.. what do I have to look forward too? So now she's decided she wants a pet.. a hamster to be specific.. Let me just say I want a hamster like I want to shoot myself... Ugh! She says she's ready for "Pet Ownership" has given me all the reason(s) why she NEEDS a pet... A little 411 on my girl.. she freaked out when her hermitt crab died.. she cried about it for about a week... when her fish died again it was horrible the world came to an end... I know she's going to be upset if she doesn't get a pet for her Bday.. I just am worried we may both need therapy IF anything bad happens to say a hamster or something of that nature... Thoughts?

This is exactly why you should get her a hamster .. It's all part of growing up and learning responsibility for others.. Hamsters are cool to watch in their wheel.. Buy the hamster ball that you put the hamster in so in can roll around the house in it.. All kids need to have pets .. it helps shape their personalities Merin, She needs to learn about pets and that they don't live forever.. Her crying about the hermit crab was good for her.. You just want to protect her .

My Wee Peeps have had 3 Dogs 2 Turtles 5 Fish 3 or 4 Hermitt Crabs I don't mind her having a pet, but I do worry about her taking care of it.. and because my girl is tender hearted I also worry about something happening to the Pet.. I know it's a part of life.. but yeah it killed me when her fish died.. she was heart broken... Originally posted by tiki Get her a rabbit. They're cool. LOL She asked for one of those too... I dunno? How much work is a rabbit?

I have a bunny rabbit thread somewhere in here. Everyone seems to love them! He's super easy to take care of (believe me). And I'm even afraid of animals. My son dressed him up and put necklaces and tied his ears together the other day. He puts chapstick on him (ok, he got in trouble for this one), carries him like a baby, puts him in suitcases and drags him around the house. He's perfect for us.

SoftDrink Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 i had a rabbit for a few years when i was about 5 or 6. it's name was cotton (how original) and she didn't stink. i played with her all the time. she died the day before my 8th birthday. happy birthday to me. i didn't ask for the rabbit, it was my sister's and she got tired of it. i was never allowed to have any other pet after that, nor did i want one. i turned out just fine anyhow. just my $.fitty cent.

Rabbits poop alot but if you get one of the mini rabbits they are sooooo cute.. Rabbits can also be litterbox trained ..
Author Merin Posted July 20, 2005 Author Posted July 20, 2005 Originally posted by A Fly onThe Wall Rabbits can also be litterbox trained .. Really?
quankanne Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 DH says you can litterbox-train a bunny, and if you raise it alongside your other pets, they do just fine (no one goes on a feeding frenzy). the only bad things about rabbits is that you have to learn to handle them (hold, pick up, carry) them properly because of their backs. Or so I'm told. Hamsters: uuuummmmmm .... never had a good experience with them, they're kinda snippy, much like Chihuahuas are poor pets for families with kids because they bite. My sister bought a couple of guinea pigs for her grandkids, and they've all adjusted pretty well. The neat thing is that they recognize the kids, so the little ones are pretty excited about that. And there's no mistaking a gumpig for any other critter!
tiki Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 http://www.loveshack.org/forums/t54789/? ^My bunny thread. He's a dwarf bunny and soooo cute and soooo easy to take care of. He poops a lot though! And he's potty trained to his cage.
SoftDrink Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 why don't you just explain to her that you would like for her to have a pet, but that you have seen her reaction to lesser animals and you worry about the outcome if it dies? (in words meant for a child of course!)
tiki Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Get a chinchilla or a RES (red ear slider). It's a little tiny turtle that never gets any larger, very popular in Florida. I've had one of those, even though turtles are illegal in my state to have as a pet.

This this weekend he had him out on his craftsmen workstation putting tools over his ears to clamp them together. He hides with him in the closet with the flashlight....it's so cute. Poor starz, but he loves it! He runs straight to my son's room when we let him out.

Do you allow the bunny to run around your house?

Not really. Just here and there. She always hides underneath the couch, which makes K curse. My coworker has one and she watches TV and hangs with her. Mine's a little timid...somehow.
