Girl with a history of cutting?

She recently confessed she had a history of cutting herself, which somewhat freaked me out as I don't know what to expect. I don't mind that she is kinky but cutting might be a sign of mental issues? I tried to ask why but couldn't get a meaningful response other than her first crush was expelled from her school and she knew she would never see him again. She said she stopped after a year or so. I've dated a few people with issues and I know that is not a great idea (because something weird happens down the line) but this seems to have happened when she was 12-13. I am not sure what to think about this. Anyone with a cutting experience care to chime in and tell me what the heck is going on?

-She grew up without a father and recently lost her mom who was a single mother.

 

 

-Last time I saw her I didn't notice any signs of cutting. Having said that I am not sure if cutters can stop like that.

 

 

-I asked how she started and she said her cat had scratched her at the time and she just made it worse and kept doing it.

 

 

Have you guys dated someone who was a cutter? What kind of crazy things can I expect? Or can we brush this up as a one time thing for someone who was having a rough time. I am not sure.

One of my concerns is ... if she can harm herself, she can easily harm me when things go sour. Or if she feels I will abandon her. I mean am I in danger? Should I keep my distance from this lady?
