I found out later that he wanted to get back with his ex who broke his heart not long before we met. So I broke up with him. I felt like I was a rebound and it hurt me. But our relationship lasted for 2 years and we were each other's firsts. He also introduced me to his family unlike his ex. I don't understand what happened.

If I wasn't, then what could have possibly made him go back to someone who broke his heart 2 years ago? We didn't have much issues when we were together.

The relationship lasted 4 years, before they broke up. I believe sometimes people go back to exes because they still love them, and sometimes they change as people over a few years so it is possible to start over again. You didn't do anything it was his actions and they are down to him. I'm sorry this has happened, but you need to try and move on now. It will drive you crazy trying to work out what happened. It's his loss and he will realise when she breaks his heart again! 1
