lvgrly Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 Has anyone else heard of the DL thing thats going on? Women and expecially african american women are at HUGE risk for AIDS, and its because of their husbands, boyfriends, whatever.. Men are sleeping with other men and or women and getting aids, coming home to their wives and spreading it. Its pretty sad, the men who are doing it, are not calling themselfs gay, or bisexual, they just think its normal, and they are fullfilling some weird fantasy they have had before. As long as these men are married they are not considered gay or bisexual...Thats wrong It is sad that we live in such a place that doesnt care about the effects of sleeping with people.. Its not just STDs or getting pregnat anymore, Its about life or death when you choose to sleep with someone... Anyone else been reading about this? Its kinda scary in the dating world, or just having casual sex. Does anyone get tested every so often, or are some of you not worried about it?
Author lvgrly Posted July 8, 2005 Author Posted July 8, 2005 An estimated 500,000 Americans have died of AIDS since the disease first appeared in the early '80s. For the past decade, there have been an estimated 40,000 new infections per year. It is estimated that of the 850,000–950,000 Americans living with HIV one in four are unaware of their infection. An estimated two-thirds of new cases come from people who are unaware that they are infected with HIV. In 2000, HIV/AIDS was among the top three causes of death for African-American men ages 25–54 and African-American women ages 35–44. Black women account for 72% of all the new HIV cases in women. 67% of black women with HIV contracted it from heterosexual sex. African American women are 23 times more times likely to be infected with AIDS than white women. African American men are almost nine times more likely to be infected with AIDS than white men. Seniors represent an estimated 14% of total AIDS cases, and senior women represent 18% of female AIDS cases. At it's core a man on the down low is no different than a closeted man. However, the high numbers of HIV cases within the African-American community, especially among straight black women, has brought attention to this phenomenon. A growing number of people feel that men on the down low who have unprotected sex with other men pose a health risk to their girlfriends or wives. Since men on the dl do not consider themselves gay or bisexual, they feel no need to disclose their activities.
