I just got criticized earlier by suggesting in another thread the *possibility* that the OP suffered from some sort of a social disorder, like autism or Aspergers.

This was based on all the poster's various threads and her experiences with various men.

Apparently I was out of line for suggesting this, and I am at a loss to understand why.

This criticism proves to me precisely why there is still such a stigma.

We all may suspect it, but sshhhhh. don't say anything about it, keep it to yourself.

Even though such a suggestion may help the OP or result in that poster exploring the possibility.

I mean if someone were complaining about physical symptoms that pointed to let's say cancer or another physical illness, would I have received the same criticism for suggesting the poster get to a doctor and explore the possibility?

There was no diagnosis given. I am not a shrink, nor have I ever met the OP so I actually have no idea... again it was just a suggestion based on everything she had posted in various threads.

We need to squelch this stigma imo. And stop walking on eggshells and tip toeing around mental issues.

There is nothing to be ashamed of. We all have issues, some more severe than others.

Let's talk about it, bring it out in the open. Discuss it!

Not criticize people for doing do.

Tnx for listening!

I was moderated once for suggesting the same.

I believe it's against the rules to diagnose, even under the guise of a 'suggestion'.

Maybe mods can clarify; there may even be a sticky on it.

Yeah but as I said, no one has an issue with suggesting something based on *physical* symptoms.

Hell I started a recent thread re experiencing a cramp in my leg and received all sorts of various possible diagnosis. Some pretty serious!

I appreciated it!

But when it comes to mental issues, sshhhhh, hush hush.

This is the stigma and it's wrong imo.

I never suggested that having Aspergers was "wrong" or "stigmatized." I myself have depression, GAD, panic disorder, hypochondria and mild dyslexia, and I will happily discuss any of those things with anyone.

I criticized you because if the OP of that thread (or any OP of any thread) does indeed have Aspergers, or is on the spectrum, or has a mental illness, it's up to them to bring up the topic, not anyone else. Maybe they doesn't wish to discuss it with a bunch of internet strangers. If/once it's brought up, then it's fine to talk about. Otherwise, I feel it's a no-go, at least not the way you broached the topic.

If you suspect someone of something like that, then even asking, "have you even been diagnosed with XYZ?" is a heck of a lot better than simply saying, "based on your threads, I think you have XYZ."

Do you see the difference?

We really don't know, given the information, and you know what they say about making assumptions ...

Thank you for clarifying la. Perhaps I worded it incorrectly. And should have asked instead of how I worded it

My bad.

That said , imo when someone creates a thread discussing the same issues over and over, they should be open to all responses.... positive, negative and everything in between.

I am pretty blunt sometimes but perhaps could have been a bit more sensitive...as it is a sensitive issue.

This isn't directed at you or anyone really, I am just so tired of the stigma.

As many already know, I myself have been diagnosed with Bipolar II... but have it under control now...knock wood.

I am not ashamed at all, but still experience the stigma...so hesitate to disclose.

Pisses me off.

Anyway, again thank you for clarifying, I get your point. :)
