Hello,

Just discovered this forum and I am looking to get into online dating. All I have ever tried before is Tinder . Don't get me wrong it was fun but I am ready to get serious. I am a 29 year old male living in California looking for a long term relationship, not just a fling, which Tinder was great for . Wondering if anybody has advice on what dating site to use for my paticular situation in terms of my age, location, what I am looking for, etc?

Please let me know if you require any additional information from me to make the best recommendation.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers,

Ben

Just to let you know, OLD is a whole different kind of animal and can be frustrating. There is a lot of distrust, scamming and deceit. But, there are some people who are trying to dig through all that to find something serious.

Here is are my views and I have tried all of them to differing frequency:

1. Plenty of Fish....FREE. Most volume. It has been the most successful for me.

2. OKCupid. FREE. It seems to harbor more serious daters, but the volume isn't as high. It's been ok.

3. EHarmony. PAID. You do not have control over who you are matched with. The "algorithm" does that for you. Can be frustrating b/c of that. More serious professionals are convinced that it is better suited for them. My most successful relationships have come from it.

4. Match. Combination of Eharmony and POF...:-), but PAID. Least successful for me, but you may want to try, of course.

5. Zoosk. Nope.

I've never tried Tinder, so can't compare. Good luck....No, really, Good luck. :p

In general, the paid websites are better. You will connect with decent / respectable people on Match. Probably the best one possible. EHarmony is a waste of time. You sit there for an hour and a half answering deep, meaningful questions, then they ultimately match you with people within a radius of your zip code. Of those you do match with, you'll end up going through long questionnaires and get bored with it. I only connected to two people with that - one here in my city and another in Michigan (I'm in Ohio). The MI man I had three phone calls with (in the days before Skype), and one day I never heard from him again. Seemed like an okay guy, I have no reason to think otherwise about him, but one day we never talked again. The other, I met face to face, then we had a few text messages afterward and I never heard from him again after that.

Of the free ones? POF and OKCupid. OKC I had some luck on actually meeting a few people, POF I did as well, but more crazies there. The last one was insane, I vowed to never internet date again after that.

If I had some all purpose advice to give, I would give it, but there is no one answer as to how to meet someone anymore. SOmeone of quality that is.

1. OK Cupid - my favorite general site. Answer 50 or so questions that are really important to you (don't bother answering odd or unimportant questions, it just throws off your matches) and it will give you match percentage with others. I've found this helpful, if a girl matches over 85% then we likely have similar philosophy on politics, religion, and sex.

2. Plenty of Fish - this is a free for all site. It's as basic as you can get. You might find a match but it's more hit/miss, and women tend to have little useful info on their profile. Closer to Tinder.

3. Match - the only paid site I can suggest. The bonus is the women tend to be more serious about finding someone. The downside is there are far fewer women to connect with. It still has the main online dating problem = lots of men, less women (means women can be extra picky).

4. Get involved in Meetups (meetup.com) and shrug the standard online dating concept. Meet women naturally doing things you enjoy and make a connection. Don't go in looking for girls, just get involved and let it happen.

I'd suggest you to try with Partyline.com. It is a chat line site where you meet new people over the phone. It is a very interesting and a lot of people met on the Partyline. You can try it and see how it works.

I would try Okcupid and meetup. Okcupid has a good and active mix of people that are around your age and most people I've met aren't just looking to hookup. I'm a woman around your age and OKC has been the best website out of the ones I've tried. I found that the quality of the people on paid sites was actually lower.

Meetup allows you to meet women that have similar interests as you in person. Pretty much any decently sized city will have a singles group and 20s & 30s group that is pretty active. Plus these women are already open to meeting new people so starting conversation should be much easier. I've been hit on by guys at every meetup event I've been to. And you can see who else is coming to events so you can make sure you aren't stuck at a sausage fest.

If you're looking for women in their 20s, stick to the free websites. The paid sites tend to skew older.

Thanks for the detailed response and well as everybody else's advice. It was very helpful. It seems the general consensus is that the paid sites may provide a little more success in terms of finding a more long term serious relationship. Maybe that is due to that fact that everybody has to put a little skin into the game;).

I actually was doing some research today and found a comparison of eHarmony vs Match. Everybody seems to have a different opinion between the two so I guess I'll just have to give one a try and if not successful, try the other one.

I've got my fingers crossed on this one. Thanks again for all the advice and I will be sure to provide an update as things progress.

Cheers,

Ben
