seranade_u_silly Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Hey all, I'm new to these forums so after the obligatory howdeedoo I'd like to ask the visiting girls something. Part of a rock band, I play guitar and sing quite well. I have a lot of female friends that are always asking me to play them something when I have my instrument with me. I don't have a problem with playing for / serenading girls (i enjoy it actually) but I'd hate to play something that they may think sucks / play something that doesn't appeal to females. Above all I hate doing things that don't get me anywhere and despite my ability to play apparently being one of my sexiest features, the guitar hasn't gotten me anywhere with girls at all. Not a lay. Not a number. Not a kiss. Not a hug. Not a hearty handshake. Not a nothing. Well... Maybe an applause. FHM magazine did a fact and fiction type of thing where they said that guitars are indeed sexy to girls and can get you laid. Of this I have no doubt but they didn't specify what to play besides Carlos Santana and Jimmy Hendrix. I mean Santana is hard enough but who the hell can play like Jimmy Hendrix?? So... ladies... it will be really awsome if one of you or maybe more than one of you can enlighten me about this topic. What sort of songs (that can be played on a guitar) do girls like to hear? I'm looking for a general idea.
moimeme Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 There is no such thing as a generic music type that 'girls' like. Your best bet is to ask the particular girl you're trying to impress. Else you run the risk of starting up a lovely Sarah McLaughlin ballad only to find that she's craving some Motley Crue.
Author seranade_u_silly Posted July 4, 2005 Author Posted July 4, 2005 i suppose. anyone else have any ideas? how about oppinions.
debs Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 James Taylor or Eric Clapton would get a woohoo from this old girl! Most people have heard these songs from relatives playing oldies!
moimeme Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 ROTFL - I told ya so You can't get around it - you have to memorize a few of each genre and hope that your gal will pick one of the artists you've studied.
AndrewJ Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 I think naything will work as long as the delivery is honest. Im allways pull out the guitar when with freinds and try to encorage sing a longs. To get them to join in I think thats when peolpe get it. Alos they feel aprt of the happy vibe thats what music is about.
ReluctantRomeo Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 My experience (as the serenading guy) is that Moimeme is right - a couple of songs from different genres work wonders. That said, a few tips. Songs you can sing along with are winners - especially romantic ones which allow her to fantasise that it's about her. Also, be sure to have some flamenco and some latin stuff to hand (bossa nova/samba/salsa). Even if they don't ever listen to this kind of stuff by themselves, there's something about the rhythm which drives girls wild. Similarly, a jazz piece will show you in a sophisticated light and they don't have to even like jazz to experience this.
SoleMate Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Spanish-style guitar, flamenco, ballads. But yeah, girls are individuals, they do have different tastes... Also, it may be a bit awkward for a prospective groupie to approach you. Think about how you can make it easier and more comfortable for the young woman/women of your choice to strike up a conversation. Good luck!

You have absolutely no idea sweetie... in these situations, the problem is usually keeping girls down to a manageable number. More often than not, they're keen to the point of irritating.
Fallen_Angel Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 My ex is a GREAT guitar player...anything he played made me swoon. Moi's right. Every girl is different...all the more reason to practice so much that you'll be able to play anything and everything when asked!
AndrewJ Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Play the song "more than words" and get your respective fairy to sing the harmony. That would make the stars shoot in the heavens

drgnflybethany Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Originally posted by seranade_u_silly i suppose. anyone else have any ideas? how about oppinions. I'd say the Beatles (particularly Yesterday) would be an easy "in" - but with my luck (and apparently yours, as well..) you'd get an Elvis fan... You sort of have to learn what the girl likes - and learn a little bit of everything to get to where you want to go... Personally, right now, John Mayer would be the ticket for me... but two months ago, that wouldn't have been the case... I know you're looking for an end-all be-all - but here's my opinion - write a song you like yourself... learn to play it well... make it come from the heart - when you meet a woman who appreciates all that care and patience it took to create that song - well, then.. you've met a very special person.. why not use that as your test, instead of trying to please the average woman or a series of average women?

morrigan Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Originally posted by SoleMate But yeah, girls are individuals, they do have different tastes... Exactly--so find out what kind of musical style a particular girl prefers. Some girls (like me) would love to hear Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, and some would cringe on it. Play something in a similar vein to the style of music your band plays.
friskywife Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 I have dated a couple of band members back in the day. I always enjoyed the things they wrote (or co-wrote) more than the cover songs.
Jeffrey Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 It's not really WHAT you play (So long as there are no sour notes), it's that you PLAY with passion. I play heavy metalcore stuff and a good evening practice is a sure way to get my DW's juices flowing.

Agreed--playing a sappy song to please someone else is nowhere as attractive to watch as someone just jamming when you easily can tell the musician loves the songs they're playing.
