Lately so many people seem to be going thru the pain of losing a pet.

I just wanted to make several suggestions people can do while their pet is alive that may help them thru the sadness in the end.

Make time to take lots of pictures of your pet, thanks to digital cameras this is especially easy. I've got enough pictures of my wolfhound to fill a photo album.

Several years before my wolfhound died someone suggested I trim some fur and keep it in an envelope to remember him by. I thought it was kind of an odd suggestion at the time but since he's been gone it's nice to have that little bit of him always w/ me.

Video tape your pet thru out its' life. This is something I intended to do but never did. I really regret it now.

Of course after he died I kept his collar and leash to remember him by. I keep it and the box w/ his ashes together and hope to have it dropped in w/ my own remains when I kick the bucket. This may be a little extreme for some but helps me deal w/ losing him.

Pets mean different things to different people but I've known many people, myself included, that have had a certain animal during a certain part of their life that has connected to them w/ a bond as strong as any human bond could be and the grief that comes at the end is the same.

I'm interested in any suggestions others may have for things to help prepare for the loss of a special pet.

I like your suggestions.

For our final goodbye, we had the vet come to our house. He didn't like being at the vets, so I figured it was much kinder to allow him to die on the sofa in his home.

Take paw prints. I'd never thought of it, but my vet sent me a card in March with my Britt's front paws rolled onto little square pieces of cardboard.

I always frame their tags inside a pic as well.

I have my Golden's favorite raccoon, Rocky. :)
