Charged with child negligence if this were to happened:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPZVjgZbx08

I know this is just part of a ficiticious movie but I still can't believe that careless, distracted parents like that guy exist (and he even trips). The making of this scene was actually inspired by the own author Stephen King whose kid was about to get run over by a big truck on the side of the road when he was a toddler but unlike the movie, he saved him right on the last second.

I would be beyond pissed off if I were the mother and my toddler got killed because my spouse was distracted and not looking.

A lot of couples break up, even strong couples, after the death or serious injury to a child because they find blame in even much smaller doses than this. There's always tremendous guilt and blame, many times too much to get past.

It's so easy to be judgemental when the event is not connected to you. But the simple fact of the matter is children do die because parents are distracted and not looking, every single day. It's hard to imagine but many family pets have died similarly. Distraction happens, sometimes with tragic consequences.

I watched some workmen the other day chopping down a neighbours tree. The guy was pushing the tree stumps into the shredder with his foot..... It would only take his trouser to be caught on that stump and he would die horribly or at least lose a leg. My stomach turned just watching him.

Familiarity is the reason why stuff like this happens. That [tree] guy has probably been doing that for years. But it will only take a small turn of fate for it to turn tragic.

One day, you will suffer a loss and blame yourself for being distracted too. Probably not a child, maybe not even a pet. But something of that nature will occur, maybe you'll just leave your car unlocked at the supermarket and return to find it gone. But when it does, you will perhaps temper the judgement on display here.

The truck driver should have been in 'possible scenario prediction' mode.

Clear road, good weather, no traffic, visibility excellent. Small child ahead, alone, at side of road. Foot off gas, brake, approach with caution. Adults to right, running to retrieve child. Truck stops, no harm done.

I'd sue the driver for dangerous driving and involuntary manslaughter.
