glitter_bug Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 It is my bf's birthday in a few days, and he is being quite depressed about it..the whole 'feeling old' thing. I just don't know what to say to make him feel better. He said that he always used to look forward to his birthdays, but he is dreading this one because he will be 'old'. I know this one is worse because he is with me and I am a bit younger than him (I just turned 21, and he is 26). Also most of the people he hangs out with at college are younger than him, adding to the old feeling. In addition, at the end of this year he will finally be finished studying and be expected to be and 'adult' in the real world with a house and rent and bills and a job. I just want to make him feel better, but I don't know what to say or do. I wish I wasn't younger than him, as I'm sure it makes it worse. Any thoughts are very welcome

Well, check out what he wants to do for his bday and respect his wishes. I suspect he'll want it to pass quietly, so arrange something light and normal for just the 2 of you, then be all sexy afterwards. I had a bad bday one time and wanted to carry on as normal (never underestimate the power of denial!). Juliet didn't get this and arranged a surprise party, which I worked with, but didn't make me happier. In the longer term, you need to get him finding goals and objectives. 26 is way too young to start thinking you're past it unless your life is a bit sad and empty for other reasons. I wish I wasn't younger than him, as I'm sure it makes it worse. No, this will probably make him feel younger.
dgiirl Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 Tell him if he doesnt snap out of it you're going to buy him a cane and put him in an old age home lol Seriously, we all experience this from time to time. But I think he's just more scared about leaving school and entering the "real" world. Just find something to do for his birthday that will be a lot of fun for him. Bowling, going to an amusement park, whatever that's fun and will remind him of being a kid For my 30th, I spent the whole day at an amusement park. It was a load of fun and I didnt even think about how old I was all day long!
