Not sure where to put this but I figured it would go good here.

I tell people my mom is Prince's biggest fan. My parents were friendly with him, although not friends, and whenever he played would have the best tickets they could get. Sometimes flying to the other side of the country to see him perform. My mom is absolutely beside herself that he's gone.

I think his music has helped her deal with the fact my dad is extremely abusive. A lot of things he wrote remind me of their relationship, and I think that's why she's such a huge fan. My parents are currently divorcing due to years of intense mental and physical abuse and I think that Prince dying has sent her in a dark place. She has been sobbing for days.

How do you help someone with the death of a celebrity?

Just like you'd deal with anybody suffering a bereavement.

Be kind

Listen

Try to understand what she's feeling

Allow her to grieve in her own way

Be patient

Show your love

Be respectful of her tears

You can think of other things, I'm sure.

Take care.

I'm far from over David Bowie, every time a song comes on the radio I start tearing up, I've loved him and his music since I was a kid (and I'm in my 40's now) and I look at him and his music as a gift.

Just like any loss, there's a grieving period and as time goes on she will be less upset and hopefully just appreciate his music even more that he's gone. She was lucky to have gone to his concerts and shows.

Been awhile and far more often with loved ones (friends and family) but my action was pretty simple:

Listen, punctuated by a few hugs.

She's doing a little better. She told me that she and my dad had gone to a party for him once and he told her he thought she was beautiful, and she felt like she was on cloud nine. I didn't know that'd happened so I feel for her more, and it increased my respect for him that he took the time to say that at a party in his honor.

It's been hard for her with all the news reports.
