A week ago my boyfriend said he loved me for the first time when he dropped me home. I was shocked, its only been 5 months, but i said me too and kissed him. I brought it up today when we went for lunch and he said "though its not that he didn't want to say it, it slipped out and was too soon for him it say it, he said he really cares for me etc etc,and that he belives the word I love you is over used (i agree).." I told him that im not in a rush to say it either and that it will be said to one another as time goes on which is what usually happens.(he agreed).....

I was fine before he said it, never bothered me that he didnt say it yet and we were...are, growing closer... but now that he said it and it "slipped out". I don't know why im a bit upset on the inside and I feel like crying because I truly felt like I ment something to him. Is this all a bad sign? Has something like this or close to it happened to anyone? and has their relationship survied it? did you get married or eventually say I love you?

He obviously meant it when he said it.

You do mean something to him, or he wouldn't have said it.

Don't overthink this.

What did you actually say when you brought it up today? Why did you bring it up in the first place?

It sounds to me like you made him feel all awkward and he tried to backpedal his way out of it.

Some guys don't want to say it until they are ready to back it up with commitment. Some guys don't say it until they are ready to put a ring on it. So they get carried away in the moment and then kick themselves for it, because they rightly know it means obligation.

My thoughts exactly.

Furthermore, 5 months down a healthy/happy relationship is not necessarily too short of a period to exchange "I love yous". Your boyfriend must have thought a fair a amount about it before saying it.

I just said so what did you mean by saying I love you? I told him I felt bad for only saying me too and not actually saying i love you back. He said it might of been too soon. When he said it, he was quickly trying going to work and we were saying our goodbyes as he rushed out my house for work it wasent a romantic way to say I love you. But he said it.

Nooooooo!

Oh no Flower, what a way to put a guy on the spot. I have to be honest and say his reaction was not at all surprising.

Eh, my husband let it slip at the 28 day mark. He had been trying to hold it in, thinking it was too soon. But he was an anxious wreck over it (falling in love and trying not to say it).

He didn't backpedal, however. And I didn't quiz him about it.

That was four years ago. OP, this isn't the worst way it could have happened. Give him time to adjust now that the cat's out of the bag!

Dude here. Totally agree with this.

OP: stop over thinking this. He said it. He meant it. He feels embarrassed now because you haven't said it but keep on bringing it up. End of story.

Don't compare your situation to anybody elses. You have a good guy who treats you well and has told you he loves you. Go with it and let your relationship grow. It's a positive thing not a negative thing.

I'm going to guess he's on a different dating message board with a story about all he got was a "me too" when he said I love you to the girl he loved.

If i told my gf I loved her, and next time she saw me she said what you did, I would assume she though I said it too soon, was uncomfortable and I would do exactly what your boyfriend did so as not to push her away.
