OK, but let's be realistic. How many relationships, between same age couples, last more than 10 years? Not that many. And most that do are miserable and staying together for the kids. So, just theoretically, if my prof and I would actually go all the way, get married, have kids etc and he dies of old age in 10 years. That's not different than most marriages, is it?

Quite a profound thing to say at only 18.

It's a good point, but highly doubtful he is gonna die in his mid-60s.

More likely his health will start to deteriorate in his 70s, and you will be stuck taking care of him, perhaps for another 10 years.

But hey, you would have still had a good 10-15 year run with him!

If he wasn't your professor, I'd say go for it.

But by getting involved with you, he is jeapardizing his career....that is the bottom line.

He would be, but we are not sure if he even knows the OP exists...

She is his student, he *knows* she exists.

I was speaking hypothetically... assuming the attraction was mutual.

We know it is what she wants, so I was speaking to that....to her, letting her know it is wrong to pursue it.

I will give you this: some on here are saying you will out live the guy because of the large age gap. Well, who's to say he won't out live you? You could get Cancer in 5 years and croak... you could die in a car accident today or tomorrow. No one really knows when their time is up.

The divorce rate I believe is at 50%... a trend I've noticed are men leaving their wives after many years of marriage, and they're close in age, for much younger women to marry again.

Cassandra, here is the bottom line...

Even though you are both technically adults, most teachers sign an Ethics Contract which stipulates they will stay away from their students or lose their job. Here are just some of the guidelines in the contract:

1. The professional educator deals considerately and justly with each student, and seeks to resolve problems, including discipline, according to law and school policy.

2. The professional educator does not intentionally expose the student to disparagement.

3. The professional educator does not reveal confidential information concerning students, unless required by law.

4. The professional educator makes a constructive effort to protect the student from conditions detrimental to learning, health, or safety.

5. The professional educator endeavors to present facts without distortion, bias, or personal prejudice.

A teacher KNOWINGLY getting sexually involved with a student makes them subject to disciplinary actions including losing their job. Most instructors won't do that. Granted, there are cases of teachers getting involved with their students and not getting fired, but most won't risk it.

Yeah, you have a better shot at hooking up with one of your TAs. Not that I know about that from experience, or anything...
